What's the difference between playing Monster Hunter and living in Australia?
I've played this game for around three hours and I'm still only in two star, Those fucking village quests are a fucking trap, I assumed I was getting more missions because they were the required quests.

To anyone who doesn't want to follow a guide, the key quests are usually the large monster hunts that have become newly available to you. When you go from 1star to 2star and theres now a new large monster you can fight, its most likely a key quest. It's usually pretty clear which ones are keys

Is hyper state basically the frenzy of this game? Frenzy was decent for making regular monsters like Brachydios more unpredictable and difficult so does hyper state offer the same thing, or is it just permarage mode?
Also is Volvidon supposed to be a mammalian or reptille creature? It's reptilian aesthetically but it's under the same classification as Arzuros/Lagombi and shares their movements/body type.

Prowler is one of the best things to play early game since the gear is so easy to craft.
You can teach one support and one skill from other cat to another so if you don't care about having a "perfect" cat until late game you can just get a fighter cat with pierce boomerang and teach it boomerang pro + big boomerang

the good thing about cat recruiting is they offer you all the skills from the get-go so you can sort of future-proof your cat.

Do cats controlled by AI do significant damage? Would I notice slower kill times as a normal hunter if I focused my AI cats on stealing and healing rather than pierce boomerangs? I'm not really planning on playing one myself outside of gathering.

That's not what I have seen. The demo for this game ran smoother, the actual game stutters, objects fail to load in until they appear at your ankles. The frame rate is unbearable throughout the game. I hope the graphics aren't like this on the new jew system.

Theres only like 25 of the 71 large monsters in MHgen that cause an ailment aside from blight on top of this too so aside from a lot of samey monsters that may as well be subspecies, you're also not getting too much challenge since many of the older monsters that caused various ailments have been cut like Congala, Nerscylla, Barroth, Basarios, as well as all the variant subsecies of many other monsters.
Confusion also seems to be MHgen's meme ailment that only Malfestio applies much like Bleeding was for Seregios in MH4U.

You realize Pierce3 does 40 motion value damage and make the strongest HBG set with the most amount of Pierce 3 shots with the limiter removed and a power barrel then you go and do more damage with 3 shots at virtually any range at any time than a GS can do with a level 3 charge which they probably wont be pulling off without getting trampled or waiting for a stagger/knockout/trip/trap

Friends would help but they're not required. If you're decent at the game you can clear the online content alone. When you want to play with people you can take a gamble with randoms or just play with /v/. My friends don't play MH and I've still sunk a good 700 hours into the series.

As I'm sure you know, a lot of people are playing on high rank already because of the ability to transfer save files, which admittedly affects the rest of the player pool who are starting from square one.
As for me, even though I also played MHX, I am still enjoying MHGen a lot. But that's primarily because I am starting anew (didn't transfer my save file) and I'm playing with a fair number of friends and randoms who are all just starting the game. Plus, I never really got into the Prowlers aspect of the game, so I'm currently trying to learn more about it.

My own hype is subdued compared to 4U though. The game is a victory lap of things I've seen before rather than something brand new to experience. I got used to my selected styles within the span of the demo and they don't change how the game feels as much as I thought they would.

From back when it was X, I remember these play styles.
Adept LS, S'nS, and Bow (the latter being broken) were all effective ways to kill.
Striker GS, S'nS, or Lance worked well.
Aerial IG, SA, or GS worked really well, IG made it feel like I was flying around the level.

I've rocked GS, SA, HBG, Hammer, bow and LS through my hunting career, but I have now fallen madly in love with the Gunlance.
All that I've read about her though, is shit hunters blasting everyone away. I'm trying my best to not do that, I aim for parts of the monster that arn't cluttered, I WF away from the group and in previous games, always shelled upwards.
How can I make this easier on myself? (And other hunters?) stylewise?
Striker style builds up the arts which give me max heat quickly, which is nice for poking away.
Adept lets me reload and drop a full burst after a full counter
Aerial, which I'm having the most luck with so far, lets me leap up and aim precisely where I need to drop my burst and not scatter my party like burning leaves.

Each attack you do in sword mode lowers the gauge so getting that 0 drops you back into axe mode. You can reload with R if your gauge is low but beware that it's possible to reload in the middle of attacking.
Also the sword has that spiffy element burst which hurts monsters a good deal.

some of the styles for weapons are really retarded and weren't flushed out very well. Greatsword and Hammer's adept evasion attacks are too slow to be useful.

There is exactly one move that I can say with absolute certainty that all three share, and that is the 180 swipe.
There is another move that I'm less sure about and that's the lunge from a standing position, I am not sure whether or not Lagombi has that.
Meanwhile there are three moves that are shared by different duos, and that's the swipe combo (Volvi/Azu), butt attack (Lago/Azu) and butt slam (Lago/Volvi).

What the fuck is this. Demon Riot, Energy Charge, Absolute Evasion. You now have a super strong, infinite Sword mode, and a 100% evade that's practically on-demand since it charges in like three smacks.
Striker gets all the best times for a reason. Although the best speedrunners probably use another offensive Art in place of Evasion just to make it even better.

I know by default, hunter arts with cpp are on R2 and L2, but is there a way to make them R1 and L1? It didn't seem so from the options. It looked like you could just make it so R1 and R2 are run and such instead of making R2 run and R1 weapon arts.
I find myself using R2 to run since its more comfortable positioning wise.
Otherwise do I have to use the touch screen for weapon arts 2 and 3?

Because NX will be coming out next year, and the franchise will be moving there, it's a little water-testing filler, in a sense.
But it's still worth it. If you're into the series at all, the play-time you'll invest will make it worth the purchase.
Not to mention it adds a ton of stuff onto the usual MH gameplay you already know.
