I thought the characters were better as they actually had development. The atmosphere is a lot better, but is kind of ruined by shit pacing. Much like how p4 suffered from a lack of urgency. Some people hate that you can't directly control your party members. I thought it was kind of neat since you had to learn how the AI would react under different orders and circumstances as a way to emulate if you were a leader giving commands to others.

Anon, I went through something similar. It's just time to give up on RPGs. A major component of enjoying a good RPG is building up your team and the sense of progression it gives. Progressing through a social link becomes more meaningful when you have limited time (and I mean the in-game kind). Combining and building a really strong set of personas for the MC is where a lot of the fun comes from. If you just blow through all the combat it will be meaningless.
At this point you'll be wasting a good 20~ hours of your time just rushing through content that has absolutely no challenge. Might as well just go watch the anime instead at that point.

This isn't hate, and also is not inherently better than P4's method.
I guess I'm most confused as to why a game has to be dark or have a standoffish cast to be better. Abyss is my favorite Tales cast and story, but that's just because the rest aren't very good at what being largely carefree while Abyss is much better at being cunty and dramatic. P4 is, in my eyes, very good at being largely carefree and P3 is not great at being cunty and dramatic.
It's mostly down to interesting writing and situations. When the P4 characters had fun, I had fun. When the P3 characters were mired in drama, I had to force myself not to skip because I did not give a fuck about any of them.
