I'd recommend the Mana Khemia games, they're a lot more Atelier-style but with high school shenanigans also. Characters are great, ~anime~ stereotypes are largely avoided (MC is a twat but the plot is about making him less of a twat) and it's generally good fun all around. Also combat gets fun as fuck later on.
