How do we fix horror henre?

>>345155734
less reliance on jumpscares and grossouts. More use of atmosphere, surrealism, and using the unknown and confusion to make the player afraid.

Oh, also helplessness.

I've long contemplated the idea of a game where you play as a badass parkour soldier and your guns do jackshit to them, enemies teleport and phase through walls.
>>
More jump scares.

>>
You can't.

The internet has made the genre a complete joke and devs went where the money is.

Jumpscare twitchtube cancer makes way more than actual attempts at horror.

It will never, ever be good or relevant again.
>>
>>345156935
As you can see the area aound them is flooded, in this situation it was the end of the world for them. This is why they decided to meet on this pole and fuck eachother senseless before the unavoidable doom gets them. One last orgy. So beautiful.

Punish the player to make it scarier. Running into the monster or the wrong room or whatever triggers something that will mean even more serious repercussions further along in the game play but without seriously ramping up the difficulty to the point the game is unable to be finished

The genre is dead for anyone who matters.

>First person survival horror game
>You have a single handgun and ammo is extremely rare, maybe about 20 rounds in total can be found during the entirety of the game
>Gun handling works like it does in Receiver, with every action being manually executed by the player
>This also extends to aiming, which is completely freeform, meaning you can even aim the gun at yourself which brings us to the main gimmick of the game
>If the monster kills you, it's game over and you have to start over from the very beginning
>If you shoot yourself instead, you can continue playing from the last checkpoint you've reached
>The gun can also be used to shoot the creature to cause it to flinch in pain and allowing you time to flee and hide
>Ammo used to kill yourself will not be refunded upon continuing

Basically, if you include threats in the game, they need to matter beyond a simple reload, or nothing you create can stay scary after the first encounter.

I don't know if you can fix horror games. The genre is fundamentally broken because all it takes is you to develop an understanding of the mechanics and it is no longer scary. From my perspective it really doesn't matter how you structure the game because in the space of a few hours you've figured out how the game works and thus defeated the 'horror' with predictability. I think the only real way you could have a by and large legitimate horror game is to either keep the game very short, ensure that the monsters all have varying mechanics or extremely good AI to the point where it feels unfair. Resource scarcity and pressure are a must; the player should never be able to stop and collect themselves and should always be on the brink of resource/health starvation. Of course for most people this wouldn't be a fun experience so this hypothetical game would probably bomb and since I'm not a game dev in any sense of the word I have no idea how to balance it out.

More short 2-5 hour experiences with unique gameplay and premise. Just like five nights at freddys, but don't fucking make a bajillion sequels because it ruins the point.

You see, horror is when you don't know what's coming. All great horror games like silent hill 2, alien isolation and amnesia are way too long. After a few hours you start to realize you're in a game, you stop being immersed and instead only see game mechanics.

I still stand by the notion that jumpscares are fine in moderation.
It's also a huge bonus to jumpsares if they require to play your way out of them so you feel the initial shock and have to deal with it while desperately trying to save your ass.
Just don't make it the norm and you're golden.

Also between monsters are generally shitty.
Either have a monster so outlandish no one would even imagine it normally, or try to make it somewhat close to a real experience that could happen.
Don't pussy foot in the middle with a werewolf or some shit.

And obviously atmosphere.
Really drive home the fact they they are all alone.

I think the best horror experiences were when the DayZ mod first come out because you did not want to die because of all the work it took to find your gear. I enjoyed hiding from zombies as a fresh spawn and avoiding contract with other players. Firefights were the best as you had so much to lose.

The point of the suicide mechanic is to be able to avoid permadeath, but as said, you can only do so as long as you have ammunition, and offing yourself obviously doesn't allow you to progress in the game.
>>
>>345155734
The two biggest things that ruin horror for me in games is speed and power. If you can get away from enemies fairly quickly, then tension doesn't get to build. Also, if you don't need to fear death in a game, there is no tension. Having a gun with practically infinite ammo, that is easy to reload, running around shooting things is about the furthest you can get from a scary game. You can create the scariest atmosphere possible, and even throw in fucking jump scares, but it is meaningless in a run and gun game.

Another thing that games don't seem to understand is that solitude helps build tension. This means no second player, and not having enemies around every corner. I remember when I was a kid, I went into my uncle's room and played RE2. All I did was walk around something like an empty police station for a few minutes without anything happening in the game. I ended up getting so creeped out from the solitude that I turned the game off and went downstairs where there was light. When I played the beginning of the game being surrounded by zombies, I actually wasn't half as afraid as when I was in that police station.

Problem with games where you can't fight back:
>No challenge because failure just means restarting at a checkpoint

Problem with games where you can fight back:
>Usually not scary because you can just kill the monster

Solution:
>A balanced approach where stealth is much easier but failure results in difficult and terrifying combat sections. More consequences for death.

I think Alien Isolation had a good approach. You could temporarily fend the alien off if it found you but once alerted it'd be on the hunt. It was way easier to just be sneaky and the atmosphere was always tense.

The balance is sorta lost nowadays as everyone is just copying the Amnesia formula that lets them skimp out on designing a combat system, ammo/supplies, and designing enemies who react instead of just making a AI that's just "run toward player". Throw in a couple things getting in your face and screaming and you get 90% of all horror games today.

If any of you played Steel Battalion, you would know about the whereabouts of that fucking eject button like it was your very own heart and soul. If you get your mech shot down in that game, you'd have a brief period of time when you could eject, and if you didn't, all your saves would be deleted. You could also eject at any point in the mission, losing your current mech in the process.

Shooting yourself in the face is lame as fuck, and is extremely counter-immersive for one. It's just going to feel like a going back in time mechanic as long as you keep a round available to you. Nobody is going to use that round on the monster EVER, since the consequences of doing so means that your entire save is possibly deleted. So all it does is give you a convenient quick load button for the moment the monster spots you. Terrible.

Compare that with Steel Battalion where each time you eject, you lose the mech in question and have to go on without it. Losing too many mechs (each one costs you precious resources to gain) means a game over, which again, is a loss of your save data.

But if there are an extremely limited amount of rounds available to you at any given time, then that same dilemma is achieved after a few deaths. You simply run out of resources to keep continuing.

The only problem then is that it is an immersion breaker, but that is hardly an issue that couldn't be solved with some creative thinking. Maybe the checkpoints are beds, and each time you shoot yourself you jolt awake in the last bed you saved your game at, the whole ordeal you just went through being a nightmare.

>But if there are an extremely limited amount of rounds available to you at any given time, then that same dilemma is achieved after a few deaths

Why would it be if you go back to the previous checkpoint where you have the rounds again?

And if you lose the rounds despite going back in time, then that's even more retarded and immersion breaking, since you aren't even going back in time at that point. And in that case nobody would ever use the rounds for anything EVER, since they are worth hundreds of times more to go back a little than shooting the monster.

make a pretty good case about how resident evil 4 wasn't so much of an action game, but an innovation on the typical formula, which resident evil 5 took for granted, and instead of doubling down on the horror/terror, they doubled down on the action instead

the way to make games creepy again is to stop making them so easy and to stop making them so simple [go here and kill this. walk down this single corridor map and complete this single objective, marked by a quest arrow and shiny objects]
and don't be so afraid to be vague in what the player is expected to do

If shooting the monster would give you time to hide until it leaves and then you could continue, would shooting the monster not be better than shooting yourself and then having to face it again with one less bullet, potentially having to shoot yourself again?

Knowing when to use a bullet to hinder the monster and when to use it to kill yourself would be a part of the challenge.

Corpse Party games are more for shock value, seeing SNES tier sprites and stuff kill one another with some creepy looking anime with hallow eyes and such loses its value quickly. Most of the gameplay is trial and error, like the little girl running away from the ghost part in the first game, wrong turn, dead, run into the bathroom, cant escape, etc.

The problem with Horror games is they have no replay value and they are scary exactly once. I lost my shit more than once playing The Calling for the Wii.. but it was kinda meh the second time around.

I admit to puckering up my anus playing FEAR games.. but it was just a shooter game for replays

And maybe I might of shit myself playing DOOM3 and installed a flashlight mod to the SMG and Shotgun to get through it but it was a "enter room something spawns behind you and ahead of you" shooter

And maybe Fatal Frame was scary the first time, after that it was a CameraGun RPG shooter.
>>
>>345160478
Both of those games are mainly
>run and hide in a designated hiding spot
>wait for monster to leave or get a jumpscare from the AI "investigating" the exact spot you hid and killing you
>repeat until game is over
Ayylmao has some combat bits but they're really mediocre.

>Does it really, though?

Yes it does, by giving you a real easy way to avoid death, even if the resources needed to do it are rare. On top of that, it breaks the game tension completely by allowing you to simply "reload" to a spot where you are undoubtedly safe.

See Alien Isolation, you can lock doors behind you while the Alien is chasing you, but it will quickly run up into a vent and jump out somewhere near you, so doing that is only good for when you need to be able to hide.

More importantly though, and I keep saying this, despite you not having any comment on it but some "just pretend it was a dream" thing which would make it slightly better, it still breaks the flow and immersion the game would provide.

>tram finally arrives
>make a fucking dash for it
>hit that mother fucking button as hard as possible
>alien probably 10 feet away as tram doors close
>this was not a scripted sequence

I was highly impressed. I feel like the inclusion of the working Joes in such high number detracted from the game though, and I felt that the guns should have been able to hurt the alien enough for it to fuck off. I also was able to trap the alien in an airlock system of doors with NO vents for it to escape, I secured it with a door lock mechanism and he just teleported out which was cheap. I feel like if a player is able to do something smart like that he should be rewarded. Put a cool down on the alien for a little while allowing the player to explore and gather supplies with their won time.

Id really like an Alien game with the colonial marines with as much love and skill that went into Isolation. Maybe take inspiration from the comics. Stronghold, Colonial Marines, and Berserk could easily be excellent video games. Especially Colonial Marines (the comic obviously the video game of the same name was shit)

Devs that understand pacing, atmosphere, characters, and objects of importance to the player

One of the best recent horror games was until dawn, and that's because you wanted to keep the characters alive and you had constant fear knowing one of them could die to bullshit QTEs.

Hell maybe instill this feeling of bullshit in the player that they lose stuff when they commit mistakes. Make it feel like a common occurance but don't actually over do it so it's not unfair. If you give them a resource and take it away when they fuck up the player will naturally fear the loss of the resource right?

The dream thing was just an example of how the problem could be solved. Hell, make the game sci-fi, the player character a robot and have the gun be an omnitool with a PDA on it. When you "shoot" yourself, your consciousness is uploaded into the PDA and sent into the latest server bank you activated, from which it will be uploaded to a new robotic body. Each server station has a limited amount of bodies.

The point is that it is a narrative problem that is easily solvable and isn't a gameplay issue.

Remove all jump scares and over the top gore. Both are fucking boring.

Also, tell, don't show. Never show anything directly. Fuck, don't even tell, just allude.

One person might be afraid of spiders, another person of snakes; you will never scare all the people all the time with direct images of something "spooky". True abject horror is looking at something and not being able to understand what it is and being disturbed by that fact.

I run a panel on horror at weeaboo cons and have been for 7 years. I'm also a professor of media psychology and horror is one of my primary areas of study. I would probably fucking leave academe if I got an offer to work as a consultant on a horror game and tell these niggas what's up.

In my opinion the best way to do horror is to have it as a side element of the main game or to have it be atmospheric, I think the problem with most horror games is that they try way too hard to follow the 'horror game' formula with hide and seek bullshit where you can do literally nothing to fight against enemies that become more annoying than anything.

I would say the Siren series is great. Also I like the Penumbra games a lot; moreso than Amnesia. More popular, Silent Hills 1-3 are all good in my book.

I like a lot of horror games, I just want shit like FNAF to go away. I have never been so bored in my life and I enjoy being scared so I go into any horror game all lights off at midnight.

True that homie. Dead Space managed to spook me mostly because of the ambiance building, which it does well consistently. In any other game or in a movie I would have yawned.

I should concede then that jump scares can work, but they don't in the way in which they're handled most of the time.

to give players false hope.

If I were presenting the game at E3, I'd even present it as some essential tool of survival. And then laugh when everyone finds out guns do jackshit.

I'd also make sure the gunplay was high quality and there were plenty of guns and ammo to find!

with bf1 and the
>we wuz solders
why not a ww1 horror game?
you are a young, maybe underaged soldier on either the allies or the central powers tasked with night watch, and something supernatural is out in no man's land. there will be times where you will see the creature staring at you, and a prompt will appear to sound the alarm.
Group of soldiers will come running up to the trench asking "what is it" and all that, shifting the camera away from the being to your fellow soldiers, but as you point out the creature, the camera shifts back towards no man's land to see that the being is no longer there. You get briefly hazed and made fun of by the more senior of the soldiers as they return back to sleep. If you do this too many times the soldiers will just not believe you anymore and not come to your calls, meaning that your trench will become overrun by enemy forces at the end of the game when you actually try to call them out.
You would have to find some ways to frighten the creature before it gets too close, following a cutscene of your now paralyzed body falling backwards as you see the being float over you towards your friends, followed by panicked, bloodcurdling screams as it kills your friends

The Reddit Packet

Most horror games are awfully formulistic and differ only in the setting.
We need less gimmicks and more coherent game design, as well as less reliance on generic horror game mechanics and more focus on good gameplay.

I look to SOMA as an example of a horror game that doesn't rely on jumpscares. The monsters are as horrible in concept as they are as enemies, and there's lots of existential mindfuckery

I think a really good ai could do the trick, looking at the zombie master ai in left 4 dead 1/2.

For example, the ai tries to block your progress. Be it locking off your chosen path (stealing the needed key, forcing you to travel back to find an alternative route. Destroying the path completely or forcing you to take an alternative route that is far less safer than the one you originaly intended to follow) or sending out enemies that you can not possibly beat and either a) need to run away from until you find the means or b) eliminate it through world interactivity via lure it into some kind of trap (traps could be found already preset (need for speed mosg wanted gas stations etc. or build by the player)

Spawning different kind of monster, depending on the overall situation like: your health, your ammo, your consumables etc. Example: you have massive amount of ammo? Here are 4 enemies that are prone to dodging. Massive amount of health? Weak enemies that come in hordes etc.

Weapon degradation on top of ammo rounds could further improve the survival horror aspect.

A hidden stalker akin to bloodsuckers in stalker or slender man on top of the regular enemies. Make the ai vulnurable, make the bloodsucker be present as an indipendent, different from all other monster, higher intelligence that you can track down but, make it intelligent enough to be a threat for the player. It should be seen or hinted at, every time something goes wrong. For example, the door just broken down, you see it behind it, watching you, analyzing you, making you a plaything. It should not want just to kill you, but to play with you, use you.

Make the player the aiÄs tool. To advance further, you need to open up that door, behind that door are some monster that the ai needs to further play with the player.

etc, advanced ai is the key
