The gen might mark the first time I choose a Grass starter on my first playthrough. Though Gen 4 almost made it, I am a huge fan of the Infernape's design so I went fire for the first time since Gen 1.
Gen 1: Squirtle and Charmander are both great, bulbasaur is bland.
Gen 2: Totadile. He is a crocodile that should be the only thing needed to be said.
Gen 3: Mudkip, though I chose Treeko in the remake. Both have interesting designs but Treeko's final form is hideous.
Gen 4: All three are good designs.
Gen 5 and 6: Terrible designs. Greninja is decent the other two are deviant art tier.

Grass as a typing is pretty bad, but Grass-type Pokemon tend to get access to useful skills like status-inducing powders and Leech Seed. They can be made into defensive powerhouses you can fall back on in a pinch, which to me makes them prime starter material. Fire types by contrast tend to be specialised in attacking. I used Infernape in Platinum and that guy ended up being absolutely useless despite sporting alright offensive stats and strong-ish moves, he just got KO'd by the lightest breezes. Water type starters are mixed bag usually, decent at anything and a good Surf HM slave which makes them an easy choice. But easy choices are hardly ever interesting.

No, only originals. GSC has a great color palate, and was easilt recognizable. It had great pokemon that felt like an expansion pack rather than a new region. Music was at its peak overall in gen 2, region was the most comfy its ever been, as good as or slightly above Sinnoh, I loved the tone and Feel of the old ways clashing with the new, Ecruteak and Goldenrod being right next to each other really drives this point home, ignoring the Kanto region existing in this game.

Gen 2 fixed the shit wrong with RBY and added so much. Other than the Physical/Special Split, everything major that changed was Gen 2. Hold Items, split bag, berries, room decoration, breeding, pokerus, Day/Night, named trainers, Female trainerand best girl, Battle Tower, Mystery Gift, and Roaming Legendaries.
Gen 2 really is the perfect sequel.
I normally pick the water type because I won't have to worry about needing a mon for surf. Only time I haven't is Gen 3 and 4 for Torchic and Turtwig respectively.

HGSS had a couple misses (I'm looking at you, Dark Cave) but for the most part they did a great job with instrumentation, a lot better than what was in Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, and even added new parts to the tracks. He's actually the worst by a narrow margin in Gen II- blame his awful special attack stat and his best types being special.Bar, of course, the general amazing utility of water/ice as a pairing in single player, especially in earlier gens.
Typhlosion has a mildly better type/stat arrangement.

Black/White for introducing my overall favourite batch of new Pokemon, constructing the game so that only new Pokemon appear pre-postgame, the game engine being a massive improvement over gen4's, and game balance generally hitting a sweet spot with EXP gain scaling being a particularly daring innovation as far as the Pokemon series is concerned.
The storyline being more of a focus was an ok change of pace as well.
