There is literally nothing you can do to avoid it. You don't have any control over the placement matches, so you can easily get stuck with them there. And they can drag you to a lower rank no matter what you do. I only won 3 placement matches, and I had 3-5 gold medals every single match. It's all about coordinated assaults in Overwatch. If offense can't all jump in together, the likelihood of one man regardless of how good he is ramboing for a win is very very low. This is in part due to skill level matchmaking in every form of play. In CS you can choose a server and end up playing against scrubs. In OW you will pretty much only play against people you can lose to unless you are a god.

Secondly, they need to make the following changes to comp rankings:
1. You don't lose any rank if you lose or leave a match after a teammate left.
2. You don't lose extra rank if your team loses to an underdog team that's equal or greater to your personal rank.
3. You lose less rank after a loss if you have gold medals and gain less after a win if you have none.
Unless those changes are implemented then comp will remain a laughing stock and Overwatch will be deader than dead before the year is out.

Teamwork is extremely important as a single player simply doesn't have the sort of tools that allow them to win against the various types of opponents. Unlike CS where one player can win a round by singlehandedly wiping out the entire enemy team with a series of headshots from an assault rifle in a moment, it takes many whole seconds for most characters to kill any other character in Overwatch.
It's a team fight game. Without your team at your side, you're going to get wiped out by the enemy group bearing down on you before you kill anyone. They'll heal up all of your damage done like it never happened. The entire team of six are encouraged if not required to stick together in one organized formation to gain any ground, only a select few can really break off and attempt flanking actions or disruptions.
It is a "class" based game. At a minimum, at least three players need to be on point, covering what is effectively the "trinity" to ensure they can match an enemy team with any degree of cohesion.
A strong damage dealer who can take out high value targets, or a character that is very effective at contesting/capturing the objective.
A tank who can push the frontline while his allies behind him throw out damage, and/or a Tank who can jump in and disrupt the enemy.
A Support healer to give the team the survivability to stay in a fight

In an ASSFAGGOTS, you're never really interacting with the enemy except in fleeting, brief encounters and each player is mostly doing their own thing in their own area of the map away from the rest of their team. They can shit talk all day and neither the enemy nor their allies can really directly make him shut up because there's little information conveyed on the scoreboard and in general interactions. Besides that, the games seem to just draw in dregs who play it because it's free, are woefully bad at games and aren't willing to own up to anything.
On the other hand in a fighting game, if someone is talking shit, you just kick his ass in the game and he's done. He has no more ground to say anything. Even LowTierGod has to shut his fucking trap until he at least slinks off back to his stream and twitter and cry about losing.
In a shooter, if some guy is talking shit, you either dominate him if he's an opponent, or do better than him and point at the scoreboard showing how shit he is.*

I have to admit there's a level of impressive skill involved in making hacks.
But hacking is a reason why I dislike matchmaking strongly over valve servers for tf2.
In tf2, you see or find a hacker, you just leave and find a new server. Literally takes seconds.
With matchmaking, you're so invested in the game you're stuck and you can't remove them. You can't gain XP if a player leaves early in any match. Ever. And it takes an eternity to find a match in matchmaking. Really I have far too many reasons to dislike matchmaking.
