If the mechanics are properly built around procedural generation it can work very well, such as arguably Minecraft's survival mode. Mind you Minecraft's procedural generation was incredibly basic (blocky, undeveloped, only a small variance in biomes, only terrain is generated) and NMS' procgen is much more developed.

I pre ordered it because I know I'll find it fun. It's casual and you go exploring looking for random shit and documenting planets/animals.
I can definitely see how it won't appeal to a lot of people. Its directionless (people seem to need to be told what to do), probably not too much combat thrill and the multiplayer is sparce.
Not to mention the proceedural generation thing. The gameplay seems to have shown good variety but that stuff can get repetitive, fast, if done incorrectly.

The thing that kills me is, they brag about MUH 6 TRILLION planets but don't appear to have thrown any real curve balls into the mix bag. Elder Scrolls Morrowind was randomly generated. The territory, caves, everything was done like that. Fans whined about being to repetitive. They do it MANUALLY in Oblivion. You can't really use nuance as an excuse when game development is so expensive and time consuming and these devs decided to spend time and money to set up servers and an online infrastructure for a feature that really doesn't impact the gameplay.
