Sonic was a shitty Mario knock-off with one gimmick that the action scrolled faster than Mario. Back on 16 bit consoles, that was a mildly fun gimmick.
As a character, he isn't any better than Bubsy, and nothing about the franchise has been anything but shit since the original game.

No, sonic was a powerhouse for SEGA in the 3/4th gen. It managed to compete with nintendo when they were at their peak.
The game was objectively good, the physics were impressive for the time and it offered a fresh alternative to the platformer genre that plagued the 4th gen. The games also sold incredibly well, but that's not direct result of it's overall quality.
You'd have to be stupid to deny this, it would be like saying megaman, mario, or crash bandicoot were never good because their recent games are horrible.
