The exceptions being:
Pistol(It's not bad but like classic everything else will invalidate it)

And the explosive shot for the standard shotgun. It starts off great at the start of the game, but when you get further on it doesn't quite handle stronger enemies too well while the Charge Burst mod actually will obliterate shit especially if you aren't missing.
You can use your favorite guns and mods and get through the game, even on Nightmare. You might not be as optimal as Siege Gauss Cannon, but everything is more than viable.Tested it myself and was genuinely surprised.

The standard shotgun is underrated, the Charge Burst is actually a very good damage dealer.
Super shotgun will trump it pretty easily when mastered, but I am saying that the standard shotgun is still legit.
Also wasting ammo is not an issue, I think this is one of those huge flaws of Doom 4 because Rich get Richer and the Chainsaw.
This plays a part in why you can just use your favorite weapons though.

It's not broken, it's just extremely consistent. There isn't a single scenario where it performs poorly, but at the same time it's never game breakingly good. Now, the Judge is broken as fuck; does twice as much damage as the Loco, except it fires as fast as you can click, whilst still having six projectiles in each shot and reloading faster. You can delete your target of choice even without the shotgun perks, and with Overkill and Shotgun Impact you're a wrecking machine.

It seems like most ARPGs are falling into this bullshit too. When you have a mostly flat scaling like BL1, you can easily use weapons for a few levels if they're something good like a legendary or even a rare, but BL2 fucks it up so much that you need to be switching weapons almost constantly and fucks you over with leveled quest rewards so you end up having to save certain quests for when you're max if you want a good version of it.

This weapon was really strong in FFXII, but it was also an insane grind to get to it, which I felt justified it's level of power. The Genji Gear and Masamune was also really good. Some combination of it made you almost always hit long string of combos which was cool.
