There isn't much reason for Nintendo to keep pushing hardware. They could easily distribute these games digitally, give people an account to log what games they own and let people run the games on any device or any new Nintendo system that they buy.
The least they could have done is make this thing play cartridges, gameboy games, or third party games for the NES. I don't even think it can be updated, so it's worse in every possible way to alternatives like a RetroPi accept appearance.
I don't get why people would eat this up when even the OUYA had more functionality and you can play NES, SNES, and Sega games on an Amazon FireStick that costs $40 for the cheapest version which does a way more than just play 30 games.
The only reason I can imagine that this exists is that Nintendo had a warehouse full of old Wii parts that they wanted to get rid of

What a lot of /v/itgins here don't understand is that Nintendo isn't releasing this thing for ease of access to NES games, or simply "a better way to play." They're mostly just selling this thing for the novelty, otherwise they wouldn't put this much effort into the box and other things to look like the original NES's box. Hell, this thing is practically a collector's item.

Here are two very common NES games that I bought at the cheapest available prices on amazon back in 2009, only two years after the Wii came out and well into the Virtual Console's existence.
I don't want to defend nintendo, but NES games were and still are valuable in the second-half market. In fact if you look at these prices and compare them to their current prices you'll find that they have actually increased rather than dropped down or stayed flat despite the fact that Virtual Console still persists today.
The only reason why the Virtual Console prices seem like ripoffs is because we have had access to working Nintendo emulators for decades and downloading the ROMs is as easy as getting past the lock screen on your phone.

As a followup, you might say that those games don't count because they aren't games that are actually on Virtual Console, so here is A Link to the Past that I bought at the cheapest price back in 2010, which coincidentally just had a 3DS Virtual Console release last April.
I bought it for $14.99 not including shipping and handling back in 2010, jump to today in 2016 and the same game is at $35+ at the lowest. If you can score an ebay auction it might be less than that, but you can clearly see that the pricing that Nintendo uses isn't as bad and extortionist as is perceived.

Nintendo mentioned that each game supports "multiple suspend points". Wii VC only supports suspending on exit. Wii U and 3DS let you save just one suspend point.
That said, I don't doubt the actual emulation code will be reused VC stuff, especially from 3DS.
