Not him but it's almost contradictory to have a game with the reality of war. Because it fucking sucks.

Most of war is traveling and waiting. Which is boring and shitty to experience.

What game can replicate standing watch at midnight, catching a drag, and having a chat with the other watch guy before you look at your watch. Disappointment scrawls across your face as only 5 minutes were actually passed.

You don't want to play a game about war without either abstracting heavily or focusing purely on the kinetics of conflict.

>We were supposed to have reached a stage of civilization in which it might still be necessary to execute a criminal, but not to gloat, or to hang his wife and child by him while the orc-crowd hooted. The destruction of Germany, be it 100 times merited, is one of the most appalling world-catastrophes. Well, well,—you and I can do nothing about it. And that [should] be a measure of the amount of guilt that can justly be assumed to attach to any member of a country who is not a member of its actual Government. Well the first War of the Machines seems to be drawing to its final inconclusive chapter—leaving, alas, everyone the poorer, many bereaved or maimed and millions dead, and only one thing triumphant: the Machines.

Wasn't Chinese history full of revolutions? Like late XIX to early XX they had "100 days of reforms" then boxers rebellion then Yuan Shikaj (or how was he called) made liberal revolution, only followed by overthrowing next elected government and whole warring warlord-kingdoms followed after WWI?

you make some really good points. I thought that it WAS pretty lame that your hand was forced throughout.

But imo it doesn't really detract too much from the narrative. just because I don't personally have agency over the situation doesn't mean I can't empathize with the main character, you know?? Like how in books we can feel for the protagonist even though they're the ones making all the decisions.

But yes, the game could definitely be strengthened with a little less linearity. I think it still shows war in a way that few other games want to tackle.

also yeah the combat was pretty lame haha.. that's why I said that I found other modern FPSes more fun

If for some reason the Democratic party started a war against the world and exterminating citizens, you are implicitly responsible by not standing up and letting it happen even if you're not a registered member of the party.

For instance, Germans living near concentration camps knew 100% what was a going on and did nothing to stop it. These people are evil and deserve no respect; fortunately they were given none. The Americans forced people like this to march through the camps, including children.

What about the fact that Kyoto was knocked off the list of atomic bombing due to the cultural significance?

Nukes are programmed to detonate at preset altitudes. Some on land impact, some at certain elevations. The Hiroshima and Nagasaki devices were programmed to detonate some several thousand feet above the ground in order to maximize shockwave damage from the wind-sheer and to reduce fallout that would have occurred from a land burst.

The parachute was used specifically to give the plane time to turn around and fly away safely without getting knocked out of the sky by the air pressure wave.

That being said, the pilots were interviewed stating they actually felt 2 shockwaves. The initial shockwave from the immediate blast, and then the secondary shockwave reflection from the ground. It bounced off the Earth and went upwards. Pretty crazy shit.

Here we go with cia meme garbage
The Third World War must be fomented by taking advantage of the differences caused by the "agentur" of the "Illuminati" between the political Zionists and the leaders of Islamic World. The war must be conducted in such a way that Islam (the Moslem Arabic World) and political Zionism (the State of Israel) mutually destroy each other. Meanwhile the other nations, once more divided on this issue will be constrained to fight to the point of complete physical, moral, spiritual and economical exhaustion…We shall unleash the Nihilists and the atheists, and we shall provoke a formidable social cataclysm which in all its horror will show clearly to the nations the effect of absolute atheism, origin of savagery and of the most bloody turmoil. Then everywhere, the citizens, obliged to defend themselves against the world minority of revolutionaries, will exterminate those destroyers of civilization, and the multitude, disillusioned with Christianity, whose deistic spirits will from that moment be without compass or direction, anxious for an ideal, but without knowing where to render its adoration, will receive the true light through the universal manifestation of the pure doctrine of Lucifer, brought finally out in the public view. This manifestation will result from the general reactionary movement which will follow the destruction of Christianity and atheism, both conquered and exterminated at the same time." 4

Actually it kinda does. When the game is providing you with a decision to make, it is asking you to role playing. Role playing needs some suspension of disbelief to happen effectively. Being the completely linear game that it is, there is no suspension of disbelief in the contextual scenario of "you were being controlled / persuaded by an external force" or "you were making the decisions all along" like the game tries to convince you of.

They were used to end the war with Japan before we had to invade the mainland. The targets, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were legitimate military targets and not just pure civilian centers.

>On Marshall's orders, Major General John E. Hull looked into the tactical use of nuclear weapons for the invasion of the Japanese home islands, even after the dropping of two strategic atomic bombs on Japan (Marshall did not think that the Japanese would capitulate immediately). Colonel Lyle E. Seeman reported that at least seven Fat Man-type plutonium implosion bombs would be available by X-Day, which could be dropped on defending forces. Seeman advised that American troops not enter an area hit by a bomb for "at least 48 hours"; the risk of nuclear fallout was not well understood, and such a short amount of time after detonation would have resulted in substantial radiation exposure for the American troops.

>Ken Nichols, the District Engineer of the Manhattan Engineer District, wrote that at the beginning of August 1945, "[p]lanning for the invasion of the main Japanese home islands had reached its final stages, and if the landings actually took place, we might supply about fifteen atomic bombs to support the troops." An air burst 1,800–2,000 ft (550–610 m) above the ground had been chosen for the (Hiroshima) bomb to achieve maximum blast effects, and to minimize residual radiation on the ground as it was hoped that American troops would soon occupy the city.

no fps really covers war properly because in real war there's no heros that kill thousand of enemies
a realistic war game would be one where its hundreds of npcs plus the player vs hundreds of npcs, and when the player died he would take control of another npc.
online games also fuck it up because respawns don't realistic simulate re-enforcements, look at insurgency, war doesn't play out like that in no part of the world

The only reason they didn't surrender was because they were in talks with the Soviets to try and get a better deal than "unconditional" (which they fucking proposed in January almost the exact same terms bar the Emperor losing his throne, which MacArther ended up conceding to them anyways) But then the commies ended up doing what was essentially a back-stab by breaking their non-aggression pact in order to fulfill its Yalta/Tehran promises. Japan really didn't give a fuck that yet another couple of its cities were destroyed (Tokyo firebombings were a magnitude worse than either of the atom bombs), they just shit their pants at the idea of being partitioned between the Americans and Soviets so they sucked it up and went with the American outcome knowing it would be better in the long run for them.

Japan knew they would lose the fight. Their goal wasn't to beat America into submission, it was to cripple them long enough to strengthen their core holdings that once America did regain its strength they would be too exhausted to want to deal with trying to retake the Pacific from them. The Pearl Harbor gambit was an attempt at forcing America to the negotiation table so Japan could keep its empire and not be embargoed, other than that they had no desire to actually fight us.

Plus he was slowly dying towards the end of the war. His doctor was slowly poisoning him with morphine and I think he had signs of parkinsons disease or something like that.

A single bomb or mortar shell or bullet has less collateral damage than a nuke. The majority of people killed by the nukes were civillians. Same happened with Firebombing of Tokyo but a single firebomb could be used to less collateral effect than that. A nuke will always have higher civillian casualties than a more targeted weapon.

Also the fallout is significant. Still effecting people three generations later.
