You draw something, then you move it on the timeline and the program does the moving animation for you. If you ever see characters that move a bit like they were cut out of paper, you're seeing Motion Tween animation. Nowadays you see that more often in games than traditional animation where everything is drawn by hand. Though you can also do a hand-drawn animation loop, then create a symbol out of that and animate a motion tween on top of that as well.

Wayforward never hits deadlines, it's a legitimate problem they have and they were naive to think they'd hit that deadline with stretch goals to hit while also working on Pirate's Curse at the time. They should have been smarter about it and they are just as guilty as Mighty No 9 in hitting dates in my eyes.
That said, at least they were somewhat transparent about it and seem to have used their time wisely.

I want to get into the series before I give this game a shot. Is Pirates Curse better or at least different than Riskeys Revenge?
I hated how fucking lost I got in RR thanks to lack of landmarks, that stupid multiple layer gimmick, and everything looking super similar. On top of that it was boring. This is coming from someone whos favorite franchise is Metroid.

I think the first game is the best personally, though it's an unpopular opinion. It's a very impressive gameboy color game with a large explorable world with dungeons, mini games, and a day and night system. It's also one hell of a looker for the GBC. Though it's dated, and the screen is also way zoomed in. Also, east and west. The pacing of the dance transformations also slowed the game to a crawl at times.
Risky's Revenge improves the gameplay, but the non sprite art work is bad, it's way too short, and the layer exploration was both underused and kinda lame. Writing was decent. Dance pacing was still an issue. Damn good soundtrack though.
Pirate's Curse is the best since the original, takes all the good from Risky's Revenge, makes it longer, art is better, writing is sharp, and best soundtrack in the series so far. It made the pacing way better with the pirate weapons, but the exploration was split into multiple smaller islands rather than one large world, and I do kinda miss the day night stuff and the mini games still. Dungeons might also be the best in the series.
Half Genie Hero, I dunno yet, its straight level based, though the levels encourage exploration, and dance transformations are back, but much snappier.
Overall...its a decent enough series, I appreciate it as one of the true few series that still cares about GOOD sprite work, and it has a great Saturday morning cartoon vibe going for it, music is good and the characters are likable with an interesting setting. Gameplay ranges from being passable at worst to damn fun at best, though its usually late game in the first and third games where it gets damn fun, that or speed running.
