After finishing AC4, 5, and Zero recently, I have to say this has quickly become one of my favorite series. Are there any other essentials that someone should definitely play?

Ace Combat X is basically AC04-light. Very highly recommended. It's on PSP but emulates fairly easily.

Ace Combat 7 has everything going for it. Assault Horizon was not named 7 because they wanted to try something new with the series, something to capture the CoD crowd. It didn't do that.
Ace Combat Infinity did decent despite being F2P. What they learned is people like the old formula more than their new one.
The trailer we saw for Ace Combat 7 made me pretty confident it won't be bad. It may be another Ace Combat 6, but it won't be a Assault Horizon.
We got super weapons, cheesy dramatic story, and epic music. It'll be fun.

I have no faith in PSVR. The PS4 can't do VR well. A game as fast paced as Ace Combat will require a consistently high framerate. I don't think the PS4 can do that.

Too early to tell in my opinion. I hope they pilfer the PS2 trilogy for atmosphere and game mechanics (especially Zero) but I doubt if the current team grasps what made those games good. Not after Assault Horizon (and to a lesser extent AC6)

It's just too bad that they haven't made a good game in so long. Zero was the last I can call good without some reservations. The one after that was ok but nothing special and they only got worse from there. Including that weird cinematic shit.

Ace Combat is the only reason I bust out the PS2 anymore. I'd emulate it but then I'd have to unlock every plane and difficulty again, and it doesn't look too much better than on the actual hardware anyway.
