I remember when I was a lad, fighting Golbats in a cave in emerald so I could finally beat the E4. I saw a green Golbat, and wondered what the fuck was up with that. So, I caught it, and did a little research(at my local library of course, didn't have a computer back then), and found out every pokemon had a second color, and they were extremely rare.
I evolved it and loved my pink Crobat forever.
My only other shiny after that was when I was trying to get a modest Eevee from the free one given to you in Heart Gold. I was having trouble getting the nature I wanted, and after two hours of doing it, was given a shiny. The kicker? It was also modest. I couldn't believe the odds. I thought I was being really clever naming it LEAFEON and evolving it into an Espeon. The name sucked after gen 4 stopped having all caps, though.

Breeding for shinies with good IVs in Emerald is easy as shit if you play on emulator and if you have a flash cart it's pretty easy to transfer shit all the way to gen 6 if you want. Pic related is a Tentacool I bred a few weeks ago. Finding a male Corsola to pass on Mirror Coat took way longer than actually breeding this guy. This one isn't shiny because I wanted a regular one, but shininess easy to breed for too since that's determined in a separate step from the IVs.

It's still very much the same game. If you had a good time back then, you'll have one with the new ones too.
For what it's worth, the sluggishness of gen4's game engine almost burned me out on Pokemon, while gen5 (Black/White and their sequels) are my favourites in the series. X/Y are just okay.
