I have to say something for MGS4 moments. The whole thing was a big movie accumulating a bunch of nonsense contrivances only Kojima could be proud of, and it had a lot of crazy dragging ons explaining stuff that still may have ended up confusing to some. But a lot of the powerful moments came from realizing the history of the series itself. It really helps if you played through the previous titles to realize those moments, though.
The keyword is history. And what that talks about is getting acquainted with the development of things through time, possibly to the point of getting attached to something which inevitably faces some kind of loss or change, and those are easily some of the more grabbing moments in any form. However, the fault of these is that you often must be informed of prior knowledge going into it before it could effectively impact you.
Another kind of moment is the one that hits close to home, but these are very personal and not as easily perceivable to those who don't go through similar experiences, so it's harder to share these moments due to lack of insight. However, these may grab a person the hardest if he relates to it the most. Other people may say "So what? I don't get it."
Then we move to the category of "general" moments that everyone is just supposed to understand easily, like death, or someone breaks up with another person or gets his or her love rejected. Anyone can be hit by these and it doesn't necessarily have to be personal. But it's so simple that it may come off as cheesy or have relatively minimal impact especially with repetition, and that's what happens when feeding to a lower common denominator of people than especially hits-close-to-home type of moments. These are also so common that people often experience them enough that they become gradually used to it, especially if it's not so personal of a loss.
I see way too many cheesy death scenes in games that the impact is relatively lost on me.

Not the most emotional in gaming, but perhaps the only emotional/GOOD moment from the garbage that is ME2 is when you finish the suicide mission and they play a quick scene of Harbinger who releases the Collector leader from his mind control, only for the leader to find out that Shepard has committed genocide on his entire race with no questions asked. There's like 3 seconds of this alien we never saw before panicking and trying to hit buttons on his computer before he explodes and dies.

If you fags like that you should read the novels. Reach is tonally the only halo game that comes close to how they get and even then Reach isn't nearly as good as the first books (The Fall of Reach) depiction of the battle for reach.
Ideal reading order (assuming you've played all the games, including the spinoffs, but not the mobile ones) is:
Fall of reach > the flood* > First strike > Ghosts of onyx > Contact harvest > Cole protocol > Evolutions > Cryptum > Glasslands > Primordium > Thursday war > Silentium > Broken Circle > New blood > Hunters in the dark > last light > Fractures (not out yet)
There's an * next to the flood because it's just CE as a book, and it's not great, but it's still worth it as long as you temeper your expectations accordingly and want to see some of the little things in CE fleshed out. One of the special ops elites you kill in the eleavator on The Maw is a major character, for example
Also, I excluded the last kilo 5 book because it's complete garbage, vs just the sub par first two books in the triology (glasslands (which is required reading for better books anyways) and thursday war).

Seemed perfectly fine to me. I was actually looking up some videos of sidequests I missed and the load times on the PS2 seemed unbearable in comparison to what I had played.
I do typically prefer handheld when possible though and don't care at all if some decade-old story-driven JRPG doesn't look its best so I'm biased.

I came here to post this. I can't take "Wow, look at how sad this cutscene is" shit. When they more organically put it in gameplay though, it has a much better impact. This was one of the best because it was just you walking along surrounded by enemies unable to fight back chugging health potions like crazy. When they all stopped firing, it was an actual relief.If you look into it too much, you'll realize you're invincible, but you probably didn't realize that so it doesn't matter.

The seven-book Resident Evil series by SD Perry is pretty good, as far as game books go. A few of them follow the games they're based on very closely, and the ones that have original stories are just as good.
They're easy quick reads, but each one does feel like a RE1-3 era Resident Evil game, and that feel is in short supply now.

Killing even a single monster can ruin a mercy run and sparing even a single one ruins a Merciless run. To be fair in the latter case it makes sense, but the game forces you to hunt down and kill every enemy in an area. Yet you aren't required to hunt down and befriend every monster in a Mercy run?
