mostly the same, i used a few just because they were well above their parents in terms of growth/start stats. But they were just simply pointless to whatever plot this game had, awakening had some excuse for the child chars, they were just implemented porrly, fates had no reason for them, but they were mechanically implemented well. Level scaling/offspring seals were a fantastic idea that i wish had been awakening
There's really no point to distinct typing when everybody can use any type, and the statistical difference is trivial(and restricting it by element is retarded anyway).
It also ties into the better rebalancing that comes about as a result of eliminating weapon usage. Things that perform effective damage have to be restricted in some way.
Honestly, the only real issue is just the same thing that plagued mages in PoR/RD. Mages just don't grow that well compared to other specialized units, bows are buffed much better, and the wholesale utility of magic isn't too hot. Not to mention the addition of much more physical weapons that can attack at 1-2 range like the hidden weapons and many bows.
Honestly, all mages would really need is better magic stat growth across the board, and maybe some skill and speed to at least keep up with other midrange classes like paladin or hero, and they'll fit their niches properly.

Not really. There were a lot of useless/bad characters throughout the game that had at least some uses because of the way availability worked. It just so happened they threw a bunch of broken laguz at you for the final part. I think it was balanced by forcing you to take a bunch of garbage characters, but I never used the royals and was fine in RD. You just need units that hit the magic number.

Strange she had no problems capping speed early for me, str is very give or take, and her damage output pales in comparison to Hana, but she doesn't get one-rounded by fucking everybody, especially in the chapter where she gets the +10/10 damage taken skill.

my 1st 2 runs with her had her SPd just up to par with being able to double slow classes, and not be doubled by the speedier classes, while her STR just sat around average. Ill give you her def/res/skl are solid, ive never had any issus with those so shes a solid attacker when it comes to receiving damage, Sol helps too obviously. Awakening and Fates have the custom character, the other games just star Chrom-likes as the MC.
They have supports, but they're much more limited - usually restricted to 5 supports per character (that means getting to A with one character, then to B with another). No marriage or children, not a single support turns outright romantic.
There are many characters better written and more engaging than the schlock found in Awakening.

Think of it this way. Pick the five best supports for each Awakening/Fates character and remove all of the others. Like I said, FE7 had some gems but after having gone back and played it early this year it came to me that a large portion of the cast really isn't that special. Sacred Stones and Tellius were much better there.

Well again, it's not so much a question of being 'dumped down' as it is of volume. Looking at Awakening's and Fates' supports, it's obvious that some had more effort put into them than others. 6 is rough around the edges and has more characters than you know what to do with (though a good few of them are quite uninteresting).
7 is well-rounded and a pleasant experience throughout, with only a handful of shitty maps like the retarded pirate gaiden.
8 is my personal favorite, though I can understand why people dislike it. It's got the best story/characters of the three and some stellar fucking moments and levels. Even if balance is a bit janky compared to its predecessor it's not nearly as bad as people say (assuming you don't grind, which you shouldn't in any FE game).

What solid supports were there in SS? I honestly don't remember, it's been a long time since I've played that game. The only one I can remember being interesting was Ephraim/Dussel.
The characters weren't really bad per se, but I liked finding out the various relations in 7. The supports were the way of giving a story to the characters, and you ended up getting their personalities as well.
Plot was generic for a JRPG but admittedly different for Fire Emblem (fighting monsters instead of humans, not having a dragon as the last boss).

It's more cool for getting introduced to new stuff I feel. You come for the stuff you would recognize and walk away with new interests. I wouldn't have gotten into Resonance of Fate or Valkyria Chronicles if it weren't for the first game.
That said, I will warn you that with so many series sharing the scene, don't expect too much from a particular one showing up. Chrom and Lucina mostly get tugged along for the ride through crazy circumstances and that's their general role in all of it. Same as a majority of the cast really.
That said, the dialogue and interactions overall is where the real fun's at. Try not to expect too deep a game and let loose and you can enjoy it for the most part.
