Pokemon has been around since 1998 in the West. There is a lot of nostalgia from people back in the day when Pokemon was insanely popular. The children on /v/ are generally too young to remember this. This was a genuine craze. Kids were playing it everywhere. This craze had now bled into the modern world, where everybody has a computer on them 24/7, so the now adults who grew up with Pokemon can relive their childhood and have fun with their friends at the same time.

My city has a sculpture park and there were over 300 people there all walking around having a good time, complete strangers interacting with eachother which is something you don't see often these days.
For little kids the game genuinely is entertaining enough on its own, for everyone else it's the social aspect.
Seeing normies excited about Pokemon go brings me back to my childhood when most of us we're excited about pokemon red and blue and won't stop playing it and/or talk about it with our friends.

The only thing you're not getting is the way that most of the daily active users are playing it. People aren't walking around with their phones all day trying to catch pokemon. That's completely unrealistic. Lunch breaks and after work are peak times for a reason. Either you hadn't accepted the fact that mobile gaming is as largely popular as it is or you are misunderstanding the level of attention the game requires.
Honestly I downloaded it and kind of lost for words.
Graphically, even for a phone game it's pretty ass.
The camera interaction is ass, it's just a floating image.
Theres no fucking fighting other people even on launch, just a severely gimped method of "gym battles" with the typical Jewish phone app touch sprinkled on.
