EVERY fucking company has been trying to cash in on abusive f2p shit for YEARS. Ingress is probably the only even MILDLY popular game I've found which thought, "hey, we can actually fucking do something with these billions of phones people are carrying around."
Pokemon's the biggest, but it's also just the start. Imagine what you can do with this sort of game. RPGs where you train and level up and then fight massive bosses alongside 200 other random people. COD / FPS type games where you shoot people with your phone. Minecraft / Lego-like games where you collect blocks and use them to build your own monuments. Assassination games, where you try and "kill" a target by getting close to them without them noticing and running away.
The possibilities are literally fucking endless. You have billions of people out and about with little portable gaming devices in their pockets that they've based their entire lives around, and the first thing everybody thought to do was "I know, let's copy f2p MMOs!"?

The game itself is buggy as fuck right now, and lacks in pretty much everything except catching mons, but you are missing the social aspect of it.
If you live in a mid-sized or big city, you'll see people playing this game downtown anytime right now. Especially in PokeStops with active lures on them and nearby gyms.
The game may or may not wind down in a few weeks/months, but right now it's crazy.
