I got a ton of life out of Diablo 3 because I put my own limitations on the game. The rift system took all challenge out of the endgame because your hero can be juuuust good enough to do 55 but not good enough for 57, so that's what you play on. Who fucking cares.
I just made my own little hardcore challenges, like only use items I pick up (no crafting), use a shitty main skill instead of a min-maxed build, never repair my items and throw them away when they break, etc. Expected lifespan of one of my heroes was 2 hours - 1 week, once they died they were dead forever.
And it was way more fun than I've ever had trying to grind for Ancient items so I could maybe do Greater Rift 74 instead of 72.

Never say never, I built every runeword possible (you can't do ladder runewords on single player) in the game on singleplayer with no mods or +droprate active. I also got 2 level 99s post 1.10 on single, and probably hundreds or at least dozens pre-1.10. The only mod I ever used was shared stash, because it's not possible to xfer in single player obviously, and building runewords without being able to trade between your characters would have been prohibitively difficult. And yes, I did find even Zods.
I played D2 for 8 years, and at the peak of my addiction played an average of 150 hours a week, with my peak straight playtime at 198 hours (I was aiming for 200 but had a series of mild heart attacks so I had to lay down for a few hours and rest).

To be honest, this is the reason why hardcore is so much fun. Just when you think the game is on autopilot, some shit gets the jump on you and fucks you up, then the next thing you know you are looking at the ghost of your level 85. I died at level 87 and while most of it is being boosted, rushing, grinding, joining 50 Baal games, it's the real life persistence while death watches over you 24/7 is the real fun for me.

I have a friend who lost, count them, 5 level 98s. ALL TO THE SAME SHIT. Fucking lister glitch is brutal on HC, because characters have to be built in a way that the glitch specifically takes advantage of and you always get 1shot by it. The way it works is, the more max HP you have, the more damage it does; it happens at the fire splash on death from extra strong fire enchanted lister. You can only survive it if you have low max HP (as in, around 3K), 75%+ fire resist and fire absorb%.

This is why I always play a ranged character, helping the party out with damage from afar. I'm not an amazing player, I've never gotten my hands on a SoJ, Zod, or whatever since playing in the early 2000s. So naturally, I am a pussy ass leech who takes hands outs from pros but I love being able to accomplish something on my own terms like reaching level 85+ through determination and persistence, while I pass by the git gud corpses on my way up the season ladder. This game is so fucking good that anyone can define their own success, whether it be softcore, hardcore, racing as a pro, racing as a scrub through sheer luck and survival, or playing with private friends. You can't really do this with Diablo 3, among many of its other problems. All those conquest achievements are fucking cancer, the greater rift leaderboards are cancer.

I actually built an amazingly good bowzon at one point, I could 7v1 just about any game outside of top tier tourneys, and most people called it shit when I finally gave the build out just based on what I used, disregarding the fact that it was a proven rapist. Skills, it used all the usual, you don't really have much room for improvement there over the accepted builds, but my gear was way different.

What people don't realize about the game is, their zons will die in one hit where mine dies in 10, so I have time to fire off way more shots than they did. I also put a shitload more into VIT than the normal build; a standard zon could die in 1-2 hits to Blizzard if they missed a dodge, I could eat 7-8 shots from it and I actually had MORE dodge than the other builds since I used passive GCs instead of bow GCs.
On the same token, my summonmancer could kill absolutely anyone of any class except FB sorc in the pvp crowd and it made people butthurt as fuck because I didn't ever run BM with it, didn't even use revives; D2 pvp is all about building super tanky or fast, and slowly killing the other person. As long as you don't make a mistake, you will win every time, whereas with glass cannons you are generally either too slow to react to everything or weak ass projectile spread attacks are enough to kill you.

A level 35+ clay golem, plus a merc with holy freeze and cold damage, plus decripify can quite literally break the game, bosses while get stuck in frame animations and be unable to attack at all, I once proved it to a friend by going into hell baal at level 58 using only some +summon gear and +summon charms I borrowed from him, completely naked in all slots that didn't provide +skills so I could reach level 35, and proceeded to kill baal with ONLY a clay golem and my merc out. It took almost an hour, and that entire hour he did not attack a single time.
I said Valkyrie because she can spawn immune to all damage at level 34+. All damage includes physical.

Yep, I recall that too, and that's actually the reason she could spawn immune to all damage, because your summons are not given limits on max resist like players are, and at certain break points they can start spawning with elite tier gear and at 34+ they can spawn with highest affix/suffix on those in rare format, so if you keep rolling valks you will eventually get one that is immune to all damage because their base resist+the resists on their gear literally put them over 100%. I think Conviction could still break it, but Lower Resist could not. Even then, you are fighting a summon with 90+% resist all even if they are able to break immunity, and to clarify, it isn't just her resist that is amazing, her damage is the highest of any summon in the game, at level 40 she can 1shot ANYTHING except a 97%+ absorb ES sorc, which are rare to begin with...and it's not like the sorc can stop her anyway, with her attack speed so high from the fana aura she gets from you she can take out that sorc in a couple seconds flat even if it's not 1shot. Do you know how butthurt it made people to sit inside town with your immune to all damage valk sitting outside 1shotting people with 5K+ HP? butthurt as fuck, that's how butthurt.

There are many levels to that question, as at various different breakpoints the game was much easier/harder to level to 99. 1.09 SC XPAC is the lowest on the chart, you could with no effort get a 99 within a few days at most. Next highest is 1.09 HC XPAC, with only the chance death getting in your way of instant victory. After that it starts getting much harder. 1.10+ SC XPAC on a nongeared start of ladder char was around 2-3 months, and geared it still took around 3 weeks of near 24/7 play.
Based on the best extrapolations of how long it would take to get a level 99 on 1.10 nonXPAC factoring in XP decay and overall XP TNL, I believe it was in the trillions of minutes playtime territory, so, many lifetimes to complete. I think the highest level of anyone on nonxpac is 97, and that's when the XP decay actually goes full retard as anyone who knows 1.10+ ladder could attest, even in 1.10+ you can easily get level 97 in a couple days on a fully pre-geared char if you have an optimal party setup (top2 baal, a chaoser which you also top2, exp shriner would make it even less time than that), but 97-98 is another week, and 98-99 is around 3 weeks+. Again, those are optimal circumstances and near 24/7 play, not trying to make anyone feel like shit for taking 3 months to get to level 99, I was only in optimal situations on my first char per ladder by tagging along with the other person I top2'd with because he had a big group of supporters, with none of those circumstances/the circumstances you would run into nowadays with just bots running you, even 24/7 play would take at least 2 months because they are very inefficient speedwise, in optimal runs you can do the full run+chaos and baal top2ing in 2 minutes and 15-20 seconds, you can easily get in hundreds of runs straight per night.

1.09 and 1.10 are patch numbers, SC is softcore, HC is hardcore, XP is experience, TNL is til next level, XP decay is the rate at which experience gain decreases after each levelup, top2 is a system where the two highest levels go into the boss room and kill the boss while everyone else leaves and starts up the next game, a chaoser is a guy that clear Chaos Sanctuary so your "top2" can also kill Diablo for his additional 33K XP (Baal gives 51K at 98, diablo+baal give far more than the entire throne room), am I missing anything.

Two that I would recommend over Median are Eastern Sun and Kingdom of Tenai. Median is decent, and I do like it's endgame challenge maps, but both of those are still better. Kingdom of Tenai is probably the mod I've put the most time into, but it's hard as all fuck so not for casuals.

Some were pretty great, with arbitrary limitations (one of my favorite was the undead tournament where every character is an undead version of themselves, so you can only use specific skills, and only gears with bones/ethereal/etc.). This kind of shit kept me occupied and made me redo my battenet characters on single players. And then they upped the high runes drop rate for single player... Fucking lower kurast chest runs man.

diablo 2 is a game about the journey and story. diablo 3 is a game about the item/paragon grind.
now, while you CAN do a lot of grind in diablo 2, its not a majority of the game, the majority is from doing the campaign on normal through hell. with diablo 3, though, no one even plays the campaign, they just skip all of that and do the grind, because the campaign is so tedious and shitty.

There were around 200? servers for closed bnet, each game was assigned a random server when you created the game. When a certain number of SoJs were sold on any particular server, Uber Diablo spawned. Uber D drops Annihilus charm, which is a good SC. What people did once they found this out was, they organized pop schedules, where everyone who was in on the pop was given the server IP and the time, and each one sold one SoJ all at the scheduled time, causing an immediate pop. You could easily jump in on a pop schedule if you knew someone in the pop group if they told you the server IP and time, you just had to netstat -n in cmd each time you made a new game until your server matched the pop server.

Wrong, all games on the server popped the spawn, and uber D always popped off of a super unique, there was no randomization. You could just go to highlands portal in act 5 and pop him immediately off of one of the two superuniques right next to the portal.
