Is this satire? Even if you ignore the grinding, Earthbound's combat is boring as shit. There are no interesting strategies you can come up with within that system, almost every encounter requires you to use the same "tactic" over and over. If I wasn't using an emulator that could fast forward I wouldn't have been able to force myself through it

I'm going to be the only serious poster in this thread and tell you that yes, it's ok. It's a little too full of references for my liking and the humour is hit or miss but it's got a great soundtrack and a warm fuzzy story if you like those.
The game is 10 burgers and last for 6-7 hours. You can pirate the game very easily too if you want to give it a try first too, it's like 100 Mb.
>>
I want realistic scores to be a thing again. A 6 isn't a bad game, and that's what Undertale is.

There is no 10/10, because there still hasn't been a flawless game. Every 10 review I see still has fucking negatives.
>>
>>344826274

>>

/v/ had scared me away from it, but I gambled 7 Canadian pesos on it last steam sale.

None of the individual elements are good. It was developed by one guy, and he's obviously not an artist, and by his own admission knows no programming languages and can neither read nor write music. But the game has an undeniably strong voice, replay value, and actual good humour (reminded me of old adventure games in that regard). It's a case of the sum being greater than the parts.

Let's do away with numerical scores altogether. There is no reason for them to exist other than clickbait. It's impossible to accurately sum up a game's experience with an arbitrary number attached to it - two 9.5s could be completely different experiences altogether.

Could easily replace it with a descriptive system with five tiers

"Don't ever play this"
"There are better things to play"
"Average game, your time won't be wasted"
"Above average, memorable experience"
"Masterpiece, among the best of the genre, eternally memorable"

You can easily fit games that are not exactly 10/10 in the masterpiece genre such as GTA San Andreas, Metal Gear Solid 3, Terraria, Undertale, Ace Attorney, The Witcher 3, and so on. Those games all have flaws, but they still changed the way video games of their genre are done and are eternally memorable to those who played them.

You have games that are not exactly masterpieces, but still pretty damn good and memorable, such as Ghost Trick, Grand Theft Auto IV, Diablo 3, Dark Souls (any of them), Asscreeds, Rhythm heaven, Left for Dead 2, etc.

There are average games which are just meh like Dungeon Defenders, Frozen Sinapse, Nidhogg, Castle Crashers...

The bad games and "don't ever play this" would be dedicated to the lesser titles. I can't even tell which ones since I rarely play bad games, I do research on them before playing to avoid the bad ones.

There you go, review system is saved and clickbait potential is preserved.

>>344827782
You didn't have to tell us about your shit taste but you did.
>>
>>344827946
No because if you use numbers a 5/5 would imply a perfect game. If you use a descriptive system it doesn't mean it is perfect, but it simply defined its own genre (or redefined) and will be a precious memory that will remain with those who played it forever. Undertale falls in that category you want it or not, it certainly redefined the indie RPG genre, the 4th wall breaking gimmick, and will be remembered for decades.
>>
>>344828083
>Masterpiece, among the best of the genre,
Play more games
>>
>>344827946
Anon has a point though
A descriptive system would be less arbitrary than a numerical one, since it specifically prescribes certain actions to the consumer instead of hiding behind the vagueness of a number.

Your "descriptive system" is literally the same as that, if someone actually did that, metacritic would just translate it as a score out of 5 on their page. The story is different, the tone is different, the gameplay is different.
LISA is a traditional RPG with multiple party members each one with his own set of skills.
Undertale is more akin to a bullethell of sorts, the game has been called an RPG despite having no elements to brand it as such, only thing I could think of is levels but these are pointless since the game changes accordingly to your strength and bosses are defeated after a preset number of turns anyway.
People compare them because of their Mother/Earthbound influence but what they took from it was part of their aesthetic and the concept of humour when "dark" things are happening in the background.

Fellow gators, may we vanquish this evil of social justice from our holy land! Come, let us charge for the gates of Akkad!!! RAAAGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
>>
So glad that I played Undertale after only reading like one review of it.
Seriously this game has taught me that too much publicity can be a bad thing, and how NOT to get people to want to play a game.
What you do is say: Oh hey this game is pretty cool I think you may like it or not either or.
WHAT YOU DO NOT SAY: OH MY GOG THIS IS THE BEST GAME EVER YOU SHOULD PLAY IT I LOVE IT AND YOU WILL LOVE IT TOO 10/10 100/100 BEST GAME
One breeds interest while not creating insane expectations, while the other breeds suspicion and expectations that will likely not be matched.
Reviewers can give a game whatever they want, but the common person should not over do it when telling someone about a game that they enjoyed.
Plus the more you hear about something, the more it runs the risk of it getting annoying what interest one might have had just turns into contempt for the thing.
Hense why Undertale is hated right now, because of it's over exposure and (formerly, though still somewhat so) rabid fanbase.
There are valid reasons for disliking the game, whether you felt that the humor fell flat or it was trying too hard with it's message, or you didn't like the gameplay, or any other multitude of reasons.
I just get the feeling that the amount of hate directed at this game would be MUCH less if it wasn't so overexposed (Though overexposed is likely an understatement at this point)

TL;DR: Overexposure killed the game, though if you have good reasons for disliking it now you probably wouldn't have liked it before all of the exposure.

Angry Joe has those horrible, unfunny skits and generally has pretty casual tastes, but it's refreshing to see a reviewer who doesn't treat an 8 as an average score.
>>
>Not pretty
>10/10

And what about the game mechanics? They're pretty simplistic, and definitely not amusing. It's basically a turn-based minigame marathon where you are always dodging.

So, what's left besides some quirky, gay little story with misfit animal characters? I mean, if the game isn't even pretty, why be so excited over it?

Game critics don't criticize games, they hold up a mirror to their targeted audience and try to give force of reality to their magical thinking. This also explains why "plays off its audience" is singled out as if it's some standout trait, it's very deeply inscribed into the game critic's brain... anyways, the game-critic-cult worshippers that read these sites (IGN, Gamespot, Polygon) simply love the idea of every year knocking out a handful of "game of all time" contenders, along with other crazy ideas such as ugly, boring games being "art masterpieces", or Animal Crossing somehow being anything but a total waste of time. They want some external source to give them the good-will to enjoy games as much as possible, unthreatened by any kind of potential ill-reflection (or conscience).
>>
>>344836892
The biggest problem is that it was the corrupted gaming press/journalists rallied around this game at the time when they were being called out on all their lies, bullshit and corruption. So it's just hard for actual gamers to trust anything from those very same corrupted gaming press that threw their own readers under a bus.

At the time those corrupted press said gamers were dead and they were harassing women and other nonsense. It's just very hard for anyone to trust sjw gaming press or anything they are shilling... and the corrupted press just decided to rally around Undertale... It just hits all the red flags for many gamers. It's another indie game, one red flag, getting massive amounts of coverage from corrupted gaming press, another red flag. 10/10 scores, another red flag. Shit adds up because gamers just lost their trust completely from the corrupted gaming press. So yea, those were the biggest problems. It pushed some gamers away because gamers just can't trust gaming journalism anymore.

I really don't get why Undertale is so divisive. It's a silly little indie game with reasonably fun combat, wacky dialogue, and a cute little story with somewhat interesting usage of the medium. Why does everyone see the need to either put it on a pedestal as a 'masterpiece' or shit on it as a 'meme game'? Can't people just accept its OK-ness? Why is there the need for these endless arguments about a game that probably wasn't even intended as a 10/10 Masterpiece?

And before you go on about visual novels, a good majority of them have a lot of different content to them that your choices actually result in different events and endings, as where something like Firewatch, for example, doing any of the side stuff really doesn't fucking change anything.

>>344851379
That's probably one of the linchpins in why reviews are shit. Reviewers are chosen for their writing skills or personality, not for their personal enjoyment of a genre. And what if they DID love RPGs for example? What if they loved them so much that they overlooked things like extra tedious grinding and said it was fine and to git gud?

Reviews are so far from fact that you're basically taking it on a persons taste.
>>
>>344851626
>They had a specific story they wanted to tell, what's wrong with that?
That's why you write a book or make a movie.

>if it was 10 hours long
Depends on what type of game I'm getting for the price, anon. If all I'm getting is Firewatch with 10 hours of more walking and pressing an action button to inspect things, then no. It needs to be more involving than that.
>>
>>344849715
There's no reason to buy a $20 game that gives 3 hours of play with zero replayability when literally every other $20 game gives me more than that. So yes, price and length are important, and "durr poorfag" is not an argument.

They're both trying to do different things really.

Undertale is trying to make a point and be emotional. It's more for telling a story and getting the player to feel.

Cave Story is trying to engage the player and deliver fun and challenging gameplay. It's more for being a tight/engaging game.

It's hard to compare two things that are going for different goals.
