Games are made for a wider audience today, the industry as a whole has expanded immensely so that means accessibility is the top priority. Complexity took a hit and publishers are more concerned than ever with making sure the game sells well. It's not a black and white or night and day difference but a lot of the trends we've been seeing in the last decade or so have made it clear this is the case to an extent.

There are more casual games now, sure, because there's simply more games now. The industry has exploded in popularity. There are still many complex and deep games today. In fact, I really don't think there's an argument at all about complexity. Modern hardware affords developers complexity that was impossible in the 90s.

A far less amount of people played Diablo: Hellfire. It was the ex pac and man, it was underwhelming. It didn't add all that much content and the new characters were bland and didn't fit with the base game.
Diablo itself also had some typical 90s traits like bad mechanics to pad game length (only being able to walk when in town which took FOREVER). Holdovers directly from arcades (rip in piece) to get more quarters out of people.
