What was the last game where you had the impression that the devs where actuall trying to deliever a good game instead of just saying "yo, we need money, lets make a game."?

For me it was Soul Sacrifice. It was unique in many ways and the story plus presentation was easily one of the best Ive seen in a game. Also the whole setting and monster design, especially in Delta, was fucking great. Another would probably be Lost Odyssey, it was the last JRPG which used a traditional turn based combat system and had great characters. While it still wasnt really outstanding in almost all aspects it still sticked to me and I still remember most of it.

>last jrpg that had a traditional turn based battle system

Dragon quest exists
>>
>>344814514
>and had great characters

Was OPs requirement, but in that case Lost Odyssey fails miserably.
>>
dude i accidentally deleted that game from my memory but now it's all flooding back

it's a monhun clone, but it tries dammit... and those lore stories are so good. I spent hours reading all of that shit
>>
>>344814415
I wish Soul Sacrifice Delta was on more than just the fucking Vita. I love the system, but SSD has hands down the best story I've ever experienced in a recent video game and nobody outside of the hardcore weeaboos will ever own one.

>>344815303
Seriously, the lore is fucking top notch. How do people manage to make up such fucked up stories that really make you feel for these poor people?

Give me shit for it if you want but if you actually look at the game from a design standpoint it didn't give a fuck. From the weird emphasis on characters (Sebastian was not the main character in this game at all) to the story concept that basically allowed devs to come up with a gameplay idea and put it in because "fuck it, it's all in the dude's head anyways, why not?", to the admirable (if not occasionally misguided) attempts to recontextualize classic survival horror elements into modern horror game design and I was left feeling like this was a game that wasn't concerned with making money. Oh sure, it's Bethesda published and that comes with its own caveats but for the most part I feel like this game willfully took a shot in the dark, it's honestly a pretty inaccessible title for being from a AAA publisher.

It's also funny to me that OP's pick is Soul Sacrifice when Comcept made that. Great game but look at them now with Mighty No. 9.

how was this game so excellent

I just wish the weapons weren't five-use-only, the lore, environments, and sound were legendary-tier.

I'd love to play this but I'm not buying a vita for it. I already bought a shitty fucking 3ds for monhun.

For me likely Bloodborne. Radiant Historia.
>>
>>344816187
Fucking hell, part of the reason I was so on board with MN9 was because it was Comcept and I loved the hell out of Soul Sacrifice
>>
>>344816603

it sucks that games like this and bloodborne are exclusive, because they're literally the only reasons to buy a system that otherwise collects dust.

At least with this game (and a choice few JRPGs) I was only out $100, whereas it costs $400 to play bloodborne and future tone
>>
>>344815971
If Soul Sacrifice 2 happened, I could see it on PS4.

>and nobody outside of the hardcore weeaboos will ever own one.
Its their own fault for falling for the "the Vita has no games and is shit xDDD" meme. Spouting this bullshit over and over and completly ignoring this system was part of the reason the Vita did so bad in the west. People bought a 3DS for MonHun alone and I know someone who bought it back in the days when MH4 came out and never bothered to buy another game for it to this day. Pretty sure there are plenty of other people like it and I dont see why they couldnt do it for Soul Sacrifice. Call me an asshole, but I hope SS never gets a PC or PS4 port and it will always stay a Vita exclusive.
>>
Thing I hate about Soul Sacrifice is that it spoils the player. You go try other MonHun clones and you just feel like going "nah"
>>
>>344817119

imagine playing monster hunter and after you finish the quest >>344816446
this plays, and you learn about how you just destroyed a human being
>>
>>344817119
Also the whole twist where the first variant of the story isn't actually the real story is bull too. I felt that the "true" endings weren't worth the effort over the original endings.
>>
>tfw never played any Souls game.
>Try DS2 on a chance I had.
>Love every second of it.
Seriously why was that game hated again, I did but a single run but it was magnifecent. The feeling of exploration and going blind through everything was great.
>>
>>344817215
I don't care. Straight Avalon, son. Get out of my way, Life 1/Mag 99 has come into the room.
>>
>>344816949
Inafune and Japan Studio both said not long ago that they really enjoyed working with one another and would like to collaborate on another SS game sometime in the future, so presumably when they get around to this, it wouldn't be restricted to the Vita.
>>
Woah hold the fuck up, Soul Sacrifice Delta was actually a good game? It's on sale for 8 quid right now.
>>
>>344817694
Get it. Awesome game.
>>
>>344817694
Yep.

I bough a vita as a Vanilla machine but SSD stole my heart.
>>
>>
>>344817694
Absolutely, go buy it right now!

A lot of people here now will just slag it off without ever having touched it due to Inafune's involvement, which is a real fucking tragedy.
>>
>>344817694
Depends on what you like. Soul Sacrifice is a hell a lot faster than MonHun or other MH clones without the normal managing of equipement.
>>
>>344818000

A fine example, but every game has come across as a cash grab to you in the past 9 years?
>>
>>344818170
I don't play many games anymore.

Fair enough, I suppose.

The Monsters in Mon Hun have more personality anyways. It's why Stories is such a good idea since you finally get to team up with the monsters
>>
>>344818140
A lot of things are faster than MonHun, but they aren't as fun.

Would you rather want it to be like scalebound or just MonHun with mounts? I haven't played a good turnbase game for a while now so I actually welcome it.
>>
>>344814415
>Comcept had a hand in this

Was Marvelous and Japan Studio handling everything and Inafune just stuck his name on?
>>
>>344819239
Inafune brought over the ideas for the core concepts and design of the game, framework of the story, as well as character and monster designs. He was also quite heavily involved with the promotion and effectively cold-canvased fans himself for improvements that could be made for what eventually became Delta. So he was an ideas guy and artist that happened to do his job extremely well.
>>
>>344818296
>I don't play many games anymore.

That's obvious.
>>
>>344819092
Anything really, it is looks rather shallow even as a TB RPG. All flashy, no substance.
>>
How the fuck did Inafune get involved with a good game?
>>
a chibi simplified version of monster hunter combat with mounts would be nice
>>
>>344818642
>Expecting average humans to play optimally
>>
Magusar and Monstrux are OP. They both have Dark Arm VI and with large amounts of health and defense. You could just buff them with plant damage buffs and let them deal with the bosses.
>>
>>344819851
Because his role played to his strengths in a position that ensured he was regulated, and he was surrounded by a competent and talented team.
>>
>>344819851
>I was born yesterday.
Before the whole MN9 fiasco, Inafune had a rather nice streak, which is exactly what let MN9 shit to happen.
In the end, remember that he's just either the idea guy, a producer or both
