AR: Literally destroying society
VR: No one can get hurt

VR: Running away from society, escaping into your own shitty fake world.
AR: Improving our own reality so that we can all be better at life, while still interacting.

AR: Data about the real world.
VR: Data about a digital world.

AR: Boring adds and facebook
VR: Bad porn and games where you stand and wave your arms around like an idiot while going nowhere.

VR: Playing boring games that you can barely do something in it.
AR: Pokemon go
>>
AR: improving real reality, making it more interesting
VR: replacing reality with fake reality.

It's like two dishes. One has a steak and you can add salt/pepper or any kind of sauce you want, the other is a picture of cake with strawberry scent.

Is this going to be a thing? AR vs VR? Really?
>>
>>344810758
No chance

VR has an actual market as a peripheral if the software fails to deliver
AR Has to be it's own platform of software

AR seems cooler to me though. No worry about hurting yourself using it. No bracing yourself to reenter reality when you take it off.

VR is much more exciting from a videogame perspective and has potential to grow into something amazing like holodecks.

AR, however, has much more practical applications. For example, I think there are companies out there that are working on AR technology for firefighter helmets that would superimpose on their visors things like temperature, different kinds of toxins in the air and even highlight people and animals.

No.

AR will slowly become the next Big Thing when people start to get over Google Glass and see what Meta and Magic Leap have been developing. That tech will soon trickle down to the consumer level, and probably replace smartphones as we know them within a decade or two. Everyone's gonna have a HUD for real life.

VR will continue to grow, and in five years, everyone's gonna want one. They'll be reasonably priced by then, and have actual software support beyond janky early access niche titles. (Really cool janky early access niche titles, but janky early access niche titles nonetheless.)

For now, both technologies are incredibly young, and AR doesn't even have enthusiast-grade tech yet. It's still firmly planted in the world of development kits.

In a couple years, I'm gonna look back and laugh at all the posts about VR being a gimmick.

>AR firefighter helmets
Maybe a poor example because I can think of several devices that each do the things developers are hoping to put in the visor UI

The problem with AR development is that you have to make a device that can think better than a human can in a huge multitude of situations, otherwise it's worthless
For instance, if a firefighter had to enter a building and find somebody an AR device would need to tell him where to go and what to do faster than he could tell himself. A firefighter has 5 senses that work incredibly fast to do what they need to (at a moment when the firefighter has heightened all his/her senses to peak) and adapt to the crazy scenario before them

Christ, imagine the dev cost just to make that a *little* worth-it. Even then the cost to buy one would be too high to justify the marginal usefulness (usefulness that most won't trust because of the fear of putting oyur life and judgement in a machines hands)

VR goes one of two ways; It's own platform with games developed specifically for it that are fun to play.
OR it never gets the software it needs and at best becomes a peripheral for games that opt to support it.

It's a neat tech but it certainly isn't where it needs to be yet to become a new console platform
>>
Both are enormous wastes of money.
>>
>>344815305
>Look into a burning room, full of smoke so you can't see shit
>Visor highlights anyone who might still be in there, instantly telling the firefighter if it is worth it to go in

That seems like more than marginal usefulness to me.

>VR
>being a console

I fucking hope not. VR will go much, much farther if HMDs are treated like monitors, and not consoles.

There's a lot of walled-garden stuff happening right now, but that's only because there wasn't any sort of previous standard for what VR should be.

That being said, a lot of VR games right now are just ports, shoddy tech demos, or ports of shoddy tech demos. There are some good bits of software, but not enough to move units for anyone other than enthusiasts (like myself).

For anyone who's not already sold on it 200%, sure. Give it, like, two years minimum.

This was a concept from 2011. If they have been working on this for the last five years, I don't doubt it's pretty close to reality by now.
