After seeing how well Red Dead ran on Xbox BC I bought New Vegas to give it another chance after never really getting that into it, having a fun time.

For customization it's pretty barebones, though if you speak with House in The Strip you get the penthouse of his casino as your own personal quarters. You can put stuff in there like more storage, reloading bench, workbench, fridge, Nuka Cola machine, etc. There's a bed in there and several rooms for you and your companions. It's what I always use as a home base.

As far as I remember (been more than a year since I played NV), that rented room in Novac is a pretty safe bet. Used to keep all of my stuff there.
Apart from that, you could head to the Strip and find Mr House. He can set you up with a decent place right on the Strip. Nice view.
There's also a Brotherhood of Steel shack somewhere in the Mojave. Think you need a key to get in though. The BoS give it you if they think you're cool.
There's more, but I'm afraid that's all I remember. And as far as I know, you can't customize houses (not even F3 tier customization). Still a fantastic game. I think you'll enjoy playing it.
