With the way powering up and evolving your pokemon works, having almost a thousand different ones would make the game pretty much unplayable. You basically have to catch a whole bunch of the same pokemon to get "candies" for it that you use to power up and evolve your main pokemon.
I'm sure they'll start adding the newer generations after a while though, once they figure out a way around that.

Poke contests. Much like gym battles, but you get collectible pokeballs, and accessories from walking around.

I've been trying to figure this out too. It's ironically both the worst fuck up at launch and the most hugely popular game I've ever seen.
It's literally virtually unplayable, and even if it did work, it would still easily be the worst Pokemon game ever made.
1. Catching Pokemon by flicking Pokeballs at them rather than battling them is stupid and makes having a starter Pokemon completely pointless.
2. Gym battles are stupid because rather than actually having turns to decide what action you want to take, you just tap the screen over-and-over.
3. Taking gyms means nothing because whoever is attacking gets six Pokemon against two or three.
4. All you get for taking a gym is 10 Pokecoins and 500 stardust, who gives a fuck?
5. Each person can only have one Pokemon at each gym, so even if you're some real neato badass Pokemon Go master, your gym will always get taken because you have to share it with multiple other people.
6. You could form a team and claim a gym and all work to protect it, but you'll have to do all that thru second and third party means, because there's no friend's lists or actual teams.
6. And the biggest bust of them all: no player vs. player. I guess I just didn't my research, but I had been under the impression that the whole fucking point was going to be to battle other people.
As best I can figure it's just cool and hipster 'cause it's Pokemon, and unlike every other Pokemon game, where you had to actually own a video game system, all you need for this is a cellphone, so everyone can pretend that they've always been into that 90's faux-nerd chic Pokemon franchise.

Walking around catching pokemon just for the sake of it isn't exactly that exciting. I'll let the kids who can play it 24/7 have it. Pokemon is supposed to be for kids anyway, right?

This. There are some fairly easily implemented improvements that could be made to make it at least a mediocre game. It's the hope they make some changes and improvements that's keeping me playing the game. I wont hold my breath though.
