Instead of working with limited tech and a budget to make gameplay good, they went with presentation and to push their new engine. I really liked Half Life 2 but nothing compares to fighting HECU grunts. Combine AI is actually really good, but there is no difficulty to show how dangerous it can be. The AI is good for the most part, it reacts to the player and employs some of the same tactics grunts do with grenades and suppression but the weapons just feel so bad and ragdolls dont react well enough to beat out the gibbing and death animations. That alongside the meaty feeling weapons in HL1, normal gameplay in HL2 just feels bland.

I really enjoyed how Freeman sort of took on this mythic status amongst the military as the game progresses. He's on the lips of every marine and he doesn't even say a single word. No lame MacGuffin chasing or anything, you go from just another scientist to slowly developing this legendary status amongst the military due to how lethal and resourceful you prove to be. In a lesser game you'd meet some generic stock Pragmatic and Bloodthirsty White Military Officer character who chases you through Black Mesa and you end up having a fist fight with him in Xen or something. I loved that they never give you any singular bad guy or face as well as no ulterior motivation other than to survive (at least for the first 3/4). It was like you really were fighting a massive faceless army and not hokey "Video Game Bad Thugs #321: Evil American Military"
Added a kind of surreal or maybe ethereal feeling to it. Hard to explain, anyone know what I mean? That was one of my favourite elements of the first Half Life.

Grunts are actually really fucking stupid in HL1. They have barely any AI at all, but they scream things like 'I NEED SUPPRESSING FIRE' and 'FLANK HIM' almost randomly, so that if one of them actually does flank you by accident it seems really clever. As for grenades, they just spam grenades constantly, so inevitably any time you're behind cover you're going to get 'flushed out'.
I think HL1 and HL2 has a valuable lesson; combine AI has actually clever AI, but no way to show it, so people think it's stupid. HL1 has stupid AI with tricks to make it seem way smarter than it is, so people think it's brilliant. Sometimes it's more important to make people think something's smart then to actually make it smart.
