I haven't played X:R since it came out but I am aware that they have released a ton of free content updates, as well as some minor paid dlc as per their usual operating style.
They have apparently fixed a lot of what was BROKEN with the game which is nice, but the bugs were not the real issue. The real issue was the design flaws that won't be fixed.
I still just don't get how they misread their fans and market so badly. I can only accept it if the rumor that it was a xbox 360 game that got scrapped and turned into a PC game are true. That would explain pretty much everything, especially why there's only one ship and a very limited amount of sectors/factories/empire stuff

I've never heard microsoft and quality rumors. I think that's anachronistic. People saying stuff post launch about it.
The only real, definitive stuff that was found to support the "It was originally a console game" theory was xbox 360 audio drivers left in the game. I've heard people say the drivers can also be used for windows so there's really no silver bullet.
But pretty much everything about the game shouts "Slimmed down to meet the limited capacity of a console while still delivering a similar experience"
I don't think we'll ever know for sure. Egosoft isn't telling. All we know is their original publisher for X:R bailed on them and they switched mid development to their current. And the audio driver bit.
In the end it's a big fat fucking shame and I hope they recover enough through sales to make X4. And that's all it'd take. Just come out and say "Hey guys I know we fucked up hard and didn't remember what made our games unique but we're going to start fresh using the new engine and deliver as good of a game as X3:AP."
