Although I agree that the story subpar, but the atmosphere imo was just as good as that of 2033. The theatre town was the highlight of the game for me it looked so pretty.

In Metro 2033 the guy literally uses the n-word. Also I doubt an elite group of soliders would use gopnik-talk.
What's interesting to me about the metro franchise is how the books were much closer to being a "Russian Fallout" than the games are. Fallout uses the post-post apocalypse setting to put the American identity under a microscope, and the Metro books use the post-apocalypse setting to out the Russian identity under a microscope, yet this narrative parallel was pretty much swept under the rug in the game adaptation in favor if "Artyom kills them muties".
