You're severely deluded if you think mainline is in any way better than this pile of garbage.
It's a decent game to get yourself out of the house and explore, as well as feeding into addictive personalities. That said it really doesn't have much substance. I'm also getting tired of seeing the same Pokes over and over. I understand you can't just make it simple to find all the rares, but when your progression system is based on breaking down multiple Pokes of the same breed over and over to power up another Pokemon, it's going to be a long, boring, grindy process to get high CP rare Pokemon.
I played for like 16 hours straight today, cruising all over different parts of town, taking over gyms, hitting up tons of Pokestops and using incense and lures, and I've seen 37 different types of Pokemon. When you consider a lot of those are also evolutions, it's pretty lame. I live in a college town of 100k, so there's plenty of spots to hit up.
All this play time today and I saw Ghastly 3 times, a couple Squirtles, 1 Bulbasaur, a couple Clefairy, couple Tauros, and a few evolved Mons like Gloom and Arbok. The rest of the day it was the same all shit all over town. How the fuck are you supposed to evolve Ghastly into a Gengar, or Abra into Alakazam, or evolve your starter fully? Every gym is the same shit, Eevee evolutions, Pidgeot, and other basic shit. I know the game will start to bore me a bit and I will slow down soon, so when I'm playing hardcore and I'm still struggling this much to get rarer mons, I'll never accomplish shit if I decide to just play an hour or two per day.

I think this is true. I work an overnight hotel security job and last night I caught more Pokemon I didn't have just walking around the Hotel and the parking lot in my 8 hour shift than I did today exploring different parts of town, as well as using Incense and Lures multiple times. When I was at work every couple hours there would just be random, different Pokemon that spawned, like Ghastly and Tauros and Pinsir, opposed to the normal Pidgey, Rattata, Zubat shit you constantly see. But when I went out exploring it was all the normal shit, because I didn't stick around in the same spot for long periods of time.
I think rarer Mons are just on some type of spawn timer and your best bet to catch one is camping the same area. Patrolling a small park for 3 hours is probably going to bring in better Pokemon than trying to cover more ground.
