Trance = Entrancement? Maybe VTMB swapped the titles a bit. Entrancement (under Presence) in tabletop is basically making a person love you for a while. Preferably it would start out in the dark ages, like that Redemption game, and then progress at some point to modern nights. Personally I think dark ages is a more fun setting for vampire since you don't don't have to care as much about the masquerade and sects. The historical aspect is fun too.

I roleplayed a Ventrue with zero persuasion once. I figured my character was a typical santa monica twentysomething. Getting embraced didn't magically make him a king swaggercock executive. At the same time though, something about him had to appeal to a Ventrue sire.
So I roleplayed that in life he started out as a small-time thug, but quickly started making money hand over fist as a fence. Decent firearms, inspection, lockpicking and intimidation feats. Very high haggle.
After the embrace, he was pretty hyped about this Dominate shit. Pumped it early and relied on it for most dialogue-based solutions. Most Ventrue would probably look down on him for this, but shit, he was nearly Caitiff and he's got nobody to teach him a more subtle way.

Crossovers tend to be garbage. All the different game lines have widely different focus, and while it's fine to have another splat show up every once in a while, it seldom works well to have multiple splats in the same player group. It's smart in that it is a way to introduce new blood to the setting and also to give veterans a lot to look out for, recognize and appreciate from a fandom perspective. But your caution and concern about betting on something new is completely understandable.
What I mean is, though, for example, have a Fey or two appear somewhere, and give some general background information learned from them, from in-game books or from a few lore master characters. What I do not mean is to include many Fey and all the background information on The Hedge, every House, and so forth. Just a side mission or two and some background info which is optional.
Or say, if we're including NWoD/CofD, a Promethean NPC and/or enemy in the sewers as part of a side mission.
Just enough to show that they exist in the setting and enough information to give you the gist of what they are.
If we do go the Hunter route, the organization to which the character belongs ought to have a few NPC's and some archives of some sort which could provide lots of background information.

At the same time, oWoD was becoming too bloated, no air to breathe for personal campaigns anymore, especially with the players that took everything printed as verbatim truth (I was graced with never having those, but the horror stories I've heard along the years...).
It also tried to address many smaller issues (like separating sect and clan along more numerous and definitive lines... which had the weakness of making things a bit too conveniently gamey I find) or removing generation from background (because as much as you want to claim that 3rd generation and Cain might just be legends, when you have a system in place that is buit upon the truth of it, there an issue).
All in all I think both did well. We play what we call "WoD 1.5" games here, taling from both lines.

Before I reply, I'm going to say that I do not dislike OWoD, like I all ready said I do like it, and respect it, and I actually prefer to merge the Old and the New.
Anyway...
One of OWoD' main problems that it was a setting with an ever-present Doomsday Clock. It told you everything was ending, and soon, and it was almost constantly mentioned and integrated into the story. There was little, if any mystery, as the entire history of Vampires, Werewolves, or whatever else, was explained to you in depth, and so there wasn't much to explore, which only got worse as time went on.
Such figures as Cain and the Antediluvians and an in-depth history of them really wasn't necessary. The very nature of Vampires in Masquerade meant they would eventually die out naturally, which is why Thin Bloods were a thing. Again, the setting is declaring it's finite nature.
As for NWoD killing White Wolf, the decline began during OWoD, and in the later years of OWoD's run it essentially took on the modular style of NWoD. The recent resurgence of interest in the setting has nothing to do with reprinting the old material, and the re-printing began BECAUSE of a resurgence of interest, not as the catalyst of it. The old material was being largely re-written and borrowing from NWoD books anyway. New World of Darkness is still getting new books alongside the OWoD re-prints.
Several of the NWoD settings are generally regarded as superior to OWoD versions, such as Hunter and Changeling. I consider Mage the Awakening better than Ascension, though I think the Technocracy should get their own setting, since they don't suit a Mage setting, which is a setting I'd love to
