So, was Doomguy the one who betrayed the night sentinels?

This part wasn't clear to me, but it would make sense, I remember the first tablet said that doomguy was an unredeemable, and that he had been forged in hellfire for punishment.

The last entry on the wraiths say that the one who betrayed the night sentinels did so to have his son brought back from the dead, he was brought back as the icon of sin and then the betrayer was dealt with "swiftly and mercylessly" because thats the payment for betrayal (ironic that the demons punish betrayal with more betrayal).

The same thing happened to olivia pierce, who betrayed humanity and was "punished" in hell, not directly killed.

So, was doomguy a betrayer?

Also general doom thread

why is he so pissed tho
>>

Somebody took a shit on his froasted flakes
>>
>>344621491

Well, Wouldn't you be pissed if you were DOOM-ed to fight hell for all eternity?

Yeah, it's cool as fuck, but you get pissed off all the time due to the fucking demons.
>>
so was Olivia the Spider Mastermind or did the Spider just consume her?
>>
>>344622161

It's implied that the mastermind already existed before Olivia opened the portal. It's what reanimated the the cyberdemon after they gave it the argent reactor.

So she was most likely consumed, which would also fit with the "punishment for betrayal" thing
>>
>>344621284
Nah.

The Slayer's suit was forged by "The Wretch.' Before waking, you here a bit by someone who seems to be creating the Praetor suit, since he says how Doomguy will be more terrible than the demons, indicating that the "wretch" wasn't a demon - makes perfect sense that the demons would call the priest that betrayed his brothers "wretch." They even refuse to say his name, but intimate he has one - and the Betrayer is the only named NPC in the game aside from UAC guys.
>>
>>344621491
He is sick of slow-paced CoD clones designed for consoles
>>
>>344621284

Triggers my autism when the in-game codex says the suit is virtually indestructible but on the hardest difficulty you're like wet paper.
>>
>>344622753

How does doom plays on consoles?

>>344623030

It says its NEARLY impervious to damage and seeing how you can take around 4 punches of 30 ft demons I'd say it lives up to its reputation
>>
>>344623030
The suit might be indestructible, but that doesn't mean it absorbs shock.
>>
>>344623030

What triggers my autism is the whole "doom guy was captured" part. The tablet says that the hell priests lured him into a trap and let the building fall on top of him. OK that sounds good.

But then, you remember that doomguy was naked (Stripped of his suit) and CHAINED to the sarcophagus, that means, the demons didn't just let the building fall on top of him and let him trapped. They dug him out, took the suit away, and manually placed him there. Now its obvious he wasn't conscious to fight back, or else they wouldn't have been able to imprison him.

So, they had hell's most wanted man on their power, completely unconscious and they didnt fucking murdered him? Instead they placed him on a sarcophagus that was barely protected, despite knowing that if he ever got out, it was game over for hell

It's also possible "dropping the temple on him" is speaking obtusely.

That too. The impact must have hell energy'd his clothes off and maybe sucked his dick a little.

What's wrong with the upgrade system?

Also, first half being boring is literally your (shitty) opinion, I thought it was really fun. If anything the game got somewhat boring near the end, where you were just repeating the same slaughtering over and over.

Doom is literally one of the few franchises that has NEVER evolved, yet you complain about these things?

I mean, you know how many original monsters there are in this game?

One: The summoner, and she replaces the archville.

ALL the weapons, except for the heavy assault rifle and gauss canon, had been present in the previous games as well.

Is the name "Deag Grav" a reference to something? Sounds like a memetic reference or an anagram. Also, what was VEGA supposed to stand for? The codex said that nobody knew, it sounded as if it would make a big reveal

Theres nothing to suggest that
>>
>>344624483

I'd say they needed an actual new game+. Other than that, it was fine for a first playthrough. Games get held up on providing an endless experience instead of just giving you 1 good run. I didn't play much of Doom after the 1st play through but I still remember it as fun.
>>
>>344624110
Maybe the individual plates and parts are tough, but the suit isn't a solid piece, it joins and hinges somewhere and thats where it gets torn.
>>
>>344624197
doomguy is interdimensional. he probably started life as a normal dude but has been destined to be DOOMguy for all eternity. it's implied doom 2016 is another dimension, along with all the WADs and sequels ever created.
>>
>>344625105

ITS.NOT.FUCKING.INDESTRUCTIBLE.

The game literally does not fucking says its indestructible.

"Additional relics were found in the tomb alongside the Doom Marine. Some incantation tablets, and an ancient combat suit which was given a name: the 'Praetor Suit'. When found, it was encased in an inscribed stone tomb. The suit was extracted from the rock, cleaned, and subjected to numerous tolerance tests, and found to be almost impervious to any damage. It appeared to have some mechanical function as well- small receptors on the gloves and chest plate that attracted Argent plasma and dissipated it through capillary tubes in the substructure. Markings on the armor were also consistent with images of a man (or humanoid) seen in several of the tablets and stones found on other expeditions. The same markings were also noted on the Helix Stone,

Despite it being clear that the suit can be activated in some way, no method has been found to do it. It appears to be missing a component, likely the Doom Marine himself. "

Thats the codex entry.

Stop fucking repeating its indestructible like a retard, the game literally does not says that.
>>
>>344624773
>What's wrong with the upgrade system
Shit man, no idea aside from being forced to work with a pathetic amount of ammo and armor from the beginning of the game. There's no issue with the weapon upgrade system (aside from the challenges and last unlocks for attachments forcing me to play differently than I normally would have). Praetor Suit upgrades are another story, the upgrades are just fucking boring to the point where I don't understand why most of them just aren't available from the start. Faster ledge climbing? More equipment (literally forgot that equipment even existed, pointless addition to the game entirely)? I glossed over it entirely until the 10th or so mission where I finally realized that I had all these Suit Points and hadn't spent a single one. Unsurprisingly, I really didn't notice much of a change after investing them.

The first half of the game gets boring because of the limited enemies, weapons, and closed level design that forces you to run around chasing piss easy enemies over and over. Once you get more weapons, upgrade ammo, and more enemies start coming in the game gets more exciting obviously and there's a pleasant rhythm I found killing demons around more open and large levels.

>I mean, you know how many original monsters there are in this game?
Never complained about this, what do I care about originality with monsters? They all feel different from the original Dooms and that's all I care about.

>ALL the weapons, except for the heavy assault rifle and gauss canon, had been present in the previous games as well.
Also don't give a shit. Only complaint about the weapons is that the shotgun is lame as fuck, but the attachment that lets me use it as a grenade launcher is cool as fuck.
>>
>>344624781

Im pretty sure this doomguy isn't even human, since the descriptions of the power up all mention that powerups are 100% deadly for humans.

If you use haste your heart explodes
if you use berserk you either kill yourself or go insane
if you use quad damage you're possessed by a demon

>>
>>344625140
The actual origin of Doomguy 2016 is still up in the air, but the way that the UAC speculate is fucking retarded. Outside of being able to absorb the Argent energy bullshit, Doomguy's suit look very much like it's of contemporary human design and make, nothing like those knightly-humanoid statues you occasionally see in campaign or the multiplayer skins.

>How does doom plays on consoles?
I got through Nightmare on PS4 with little trouble. I also got through Doom and Doom 2 on PS3 on Nightmare. There are shooters that don't work well with controllers, but the Doom games aren't in that category.
>>
>>344625778

>>344625778
Doomguy is already insane, possessed by a demon and has no heart. That doesn't mean he's not human.
>>
>>344625458

I agree with the initial ammo being low as fuck, but its get decent after a single upgrade and once you have all 5 you'll pretty much never run out of it, also reminder theres the whole chainsaw mechanic, if you ran out of ammo its because you wanted to. it was easier to run out of it on doom 1.

And the suit upgrades, as you say, are mostly meaningless, so you can largely ignore them if you want, they dont hold any negative effect for the game. some should obviously have been kept as bonuses (like the one that reveals every item in the map) and others greatly improve convenience like the one that lets you switch attachments faster.

Sense of progression is important for a lot of people

He was already viewed as an unstoppable force of nature by that point where they trapped him.

It is entirely possible that they viewed him as a completely invincible entity and didn't attempt to finish him off because of their beliefs.

Especially with how all the records basically put him as an entity above demonkind and how even their strongest warriors were killed, it makes sense in context that they were absolutely terrified that he's unconscious but able to be awoken.

>but its get decent after a single upgrade
Still wasn't good enough for me, they have all of these ammo pickups early on in game and you end up using so little because of the low ammo count. When you do get the option to upgrade though, it's a little annoying to have to choose between ungimping your armor count or your ammo count. Just start the player off at the second or so ammo upgrade, make most Praetor upgrades default armor features, and up the armor count by 50 and the game would be near perfect.

>Sense of progression is important for a lot of people
The levels are already designed in a way to constantly give the player the feeling of progression(unless they're backtracking for secrets, but players dedicated to finding them probably wouldn't do this). From the gore nests, to the key cards, to the clearing room design, etc it's impossible NOT to feel a sense of progression just going through the game normally. Add Data logs to the count (If you give a shit about them) and you get some more progression in the story and lore there. Not to mention the feeling of getting a new weapon and using it to kickass which is only made even better by the weapon attachment system. I can't remember a time where I felt like I was wasting time in game at all. Sure early game was boring for reasons I mentioned earlier, but there's nothing the upgrade system offers that isn't already in the base game.
>>
>>344625458
Equipment is actually pretty mediocre but the leech grenade is blatantly overpowered with the equipment upgrade rune. It gives you armor if you have full HP and upgrading the equipment makes it spammable
>>
>>344626937

Doomguy was a literal one man army who reclaimed his home base, then teleported to another base where the moon it was on had been teleported right above Hell, then after he reclaimed that base he rappelled down to Hell and killed everything, then teleported back to Earth and singlehandedly destroyed Hell's entire invasion force, then teleported BACK to Hell and destroyed it, then killed Satan/The Icon of Sin/John Romero.

Of course the demons are going to be fucking terrified of the guy.

>Having ammo issues
Use a chainsaw on any enemy, probably one that takes 1 fuel. Like all the stray wandering zombies, or an imp.

It's a complete restock every single time.

No reason to touch the ammo upgrades until you have HP and Armor because ammo issues simply do not exist.
>>
>>344627161

>>
>>344627250
tfw I fully upgraded my ammo capacity before even touching health and armour
It wasn't so bad, really. Don't need extra health when you can obliterate demons under a hail of plasma and rocket fire without needing to restock.
>>
>>344627214
Makes no sense early game when you have a pistol, a shotgun, a chainsaw, and a assault rifle. The player is already going to be switching between those weapons (one for restocking ammo, one for CQC/Nade Launcher, one for long-mid range/missles, haven't found any use for the pistol past mission 1.)

>>344627250
Not having ammo issues, having ammo storage issues. Game provides so many ways to restock ammo and completely ruins those ways of restocking ammo by making the ammo count on guns so low in the beginning. Using the chainsaw early game also feels like a joke because it's barely worth the cost to spew out ammo drops and then pick up maybe 1/3 of what spews out.
>>
>>344625458
>There's no issue with the weapon upgrade system (aside from the challenges and last unlocks for attachments forcing me to play differently than I normally would have).

I don't see what's wrong with the game encouraging you to play differently. The upgrades are not required to beat anything so you're never forced to get them. If the player does play differently to try and get them then they're forced to change their tactics, which let them expand their way of playing a game and possibly find a better way than what they were doing before.
>>
>>344627464
Nothing wrong with that.

I just think an ammo issue goes away entirely once you get past the first couple of levels.
Didn't see any ammo issues after I got the Shotgun/Heavy Assault Rifle/Plasma Rifle.

So level 2 or 3.

Towards the end I started using the chainsaw a bit since I was always worried about running out of fuel.

Turns out that wasn't a worry I should have had.
Ammo is just really plentiful.

I had a lot of fun with Doom 4 personally, felt like I could use all my favorite guns as much as I wanted and I like all the guns
>>
>>344627701
The only problem I had in regards to ammo in DOOM is that the chaingun and HAR shared an ammo pool, which heavily limited the chaingun's applications. Especially in turret mode. Oh my god, what a bittersweet thing turret mode is. It's amazing hearing that sound as you mow down demon after demon and see the ammo counter deplete so fast, but then you realise you've only got 210 rounds to play with and it vanishes very quickly.

One charged gauss shot at a cacodemon eye would kill them instantly.

But siege mode does not increases the damage, it just gives penetrates through enemies and splashes.

So you're sacrificing mobility and a fuckload of ammo for what the rocket launcher already does. The charging thing was much more useful as its literally a powered up sniper

Siege mode, rocket detonator and cannon spinner were useless.

Burst shot was rather bad but at least it had its uses against shieldfags and pinkies

>>
>>344628340
>But siege mode does not increases the damage
Blatantly false, it triples it.

It one shots Cacodemons and Hellknights with body shots while the normal Gauss Cannon will not.
Also it tends to 2-3 shot Mancubi and their Cyber variants with body shots.
And due to it's piercing it will tear through pinkies and any lined up group of lesser enemies in a single shot.

It is literally a game breaker.

>Rocket detonator useless
Trivializes shield enemies, trivializes pinkies. Bleed effect also fucks up shield guys without having to worry about grenades and their cooldowns, freeing up space for leech grenades and their armor refills if you want them.
Not to mention if you time it right you deal 2x full rocket damage because of two explosions when you have it mastery upgraded.
It will also always stagger/kill Hell Razors.

While lock on rockets don't dish out quite as much it's still good when mastered.

If it does triples it, then the game doesn't mentions it.

The charged shot also triples damage and it charges way faster than the siege thing, its also more precise if im not mistaken.

As for the rocket thing, you know what fucks shield guys in 2 seconds as well? Grenades.

And while annoying, shield guys are literally one of the rarest, if not the rarest basic enemy in the game, you wont find more than 2 or 3 per encounter.

And what about the cannon spinner? Do you agree that one is useless?

The Chaingun spinner seems to be pretty useless, never really gave it a chance because how the hell is it supposed to match up with the turret mode?

I used shield guys as an example for the rocket detonator because of the grenade comparison.

Rocket detonator will shut down pinkies just as good if not better than the Stun Bombs but it's spammable on top of it, just blow it up when the rocket is behind them and they will flinch/die very easily. It's also really good at making revenants irrelevant because of the double explosion if you have it mastered, and will flinch them even without it.
The bleed is actually kind of useful as well since weapon switching is so fast.

Siege mode does triple the damage for the Gauss Cannon but unlike the Sniper mode you don't need precision. It deals absolutely massive damage and if you get headshots then that's killing whatever you hit and possibly whatever was next to it too.

I don't think your playstyle is invalid or anything, I just felt you were underselling these upgrades when they're actually pretty amazing. Siege mode in particular.
>>
>>344629506

>Literally a fan theory

Why the fuck do people have to state these things as fact? I get that people can have their own headcanons, but unless something is blatantly, explicitly stated by devs/word of god then its NOT canon.

this doomguy being the same as the one from doom1 is NEVER mentioned. They even made and gave you an entirely new backstory for this doomguy and you fags keep on saying he's the old doomguy
>>
>>344629676

Mostly because of what was said in >>344624353
>They knew he would always come, for he always had
>>
>>344629586
Also to add the fastest way to kill the bosses in the game is to use Siege mode shots when they are vulnerable after a BFG blast.

The damage is batshit insane.
>>
>>344629586

The chaingun spinner IS useless like you just said it cant compete with turret mode but even then, the upgrades for it are total shit and theres even 1 of them thats literally part of the turret mode upgrades too (uranium coating).

btw, pinkies die with a single SS shot in the back you just have to sidestep and they're dead, and revenants are not a big issue either, just saying
>>
>>344629807

No, fuck off, seriously, how can you misinterpret this so bad?

>They knew he would always come, for he always had

The guy had been rampaging through EVERY REGION OF HELL, so they fucking knew that if there was a region that had not been attacked, IT WOULD BE ATTACKED in due time.

It doesnt fucking says that its the original doomguy, how can you fucking twist words so bad seriously

>>344629852
Rocket detonator doesn't even require you to dodge the pinky.

It completely invalidates their armor and you can just kill them right when you see them. No need to wait for the counter after they run into a wall.

Rocket detonator just has big damage and splash so you can deal with groups pretty easily.

Honestly I mostly use Super Shotgun/Gauss Cannon with Siege/Rocket Launcher with Detonator.

Turret mode is amazing for the Chaingun but even that didn't pop up so much because of how effective the Cannon and Launcher are together.

I use the Heavy Assault Rifle more but that's because I just love the gun
>>
>>344629807

Not the guy you're quoting but thats obviously talking about the doomguy's hell crusade, not necessarily that he's the same doomguy.

>>344630010

Confession: I have never actually played the DOOM series.

I think I might play the first old games this week. Is there anything to keep note of before playing?
>>

I really wanted to buy into this meme, I bought all the upgrades for it but still it seemed to me as if the splash damage was null
>>

Yes.

No matter what source port you use, no jumping or crouching is allowed in vanilla. It breaks levels and lets you sequence break/get stuck.

Enemies are also supposed to be infinitely tall. So if you use something like ZDoom/GZDoom set up compatibility to be like classic Doom.

The rest is all up to you.
>>
>>344630010
>What did they mean by this?

"Hey, remember that doom 3 happened? Here's a little reference to it. Isn't that cool!"
>>
>>344630171

As some guy said a few posts above: Doom is a franchise that has never evolved. Its highest point in terms of content was doom 2. So after that, be ready to be doing the same things over and over.

I mean, you'll be fighting exactly the same enemy types, using exactly the same weapons throughout the entire saga and doing exactly the same thing.

Also, doom 3 is more of a survival horror, with smaller scale encounters, smaller levels, less mobility and less ammo than the other 3 games
>>
>>344630235
The blast radius is noticeably bigger but direct hits or at least very close explosions will still be ideal.

I don't know how true this is but it feels like what it did is just extend the minimal damage range for blasts, meaning you still need to get it close unless it's for zombies.

My main thing is detonating it in their face right before the impact, this boosts the damage very heavily and isn't too hard to do. The bleed adds to it as well.

>As some guy said a few posts above: Doom is a franchise that has never evolved. Its highest point in terms of content was doom 2. So after that, be ready to be doing the same things over and over.

I'm okay with repetitive things as long as they're addictive and fun, with seems to the case with the Doom series from what I'm seeing.

thanks for the answers.

Play vanilla, then try out various .wads. Don't neglect DOOM 64 either, but know that it's vastly different in terms of atmosphere and aesthetics.
>>
>>344630104
>I use the Heavy Assault Rifle more but that's because I just love the gun

Not the anon you're talking to but I was surprised by the Heavy Assault Rifle, I can't believe I love the fucking thing. I played Doom 3 back to back with 4 and the assault rifles in both is fucking night and day. The one in 3 actually does less damage per-shot than the starting pistol. What the fuck were they thinking?
>>
>>344626401
>>
>>344630302

I used jumping and crouching all the time in vanilla and I never broke the game or got stuck.

>>344630171

If you want to, look up "brutal doom"; its an overhaul for doom 1 and 2.

Makes the game pretty fucking brutal (lots of bloods, gore and sound effects) and fixes some issues (like it replaces the useless pistol with an assault rifle that remains competent throughout the game, adds reloads, Aim down sights and other goodies)
>>
>>344630521
The PDW in 3 was a SMG rather than a rifle.

There's a lot of decisions in Doom 3 that I question.

It has some nice things in there, but a lot of WHY THIS, especially when it comes to weapons.

In Doom 4 I like how just about everything feels like it has a use and is satisfying.

There's some exceptions, like the shotgun not having range like the original so it ends up completely invalidated by the Super Shotgun and the Gatling Rotator.

But overall I feel that each weapon can be used and you can stick with your favorites on any difficulty.

Does doomguy give a shit about saving humanity or getting revenge for humanity or is he just mad at demons, some of the cutscenes kinda makes it seem like all the destruction upset him

When I say break the game I tend to refer to lots of skips you can do that the game was clearly not designed for.

Let him play Vanilla first before suggesting mods that overhaul the gameplay, anon. It's good to have the base experiences so he can appreciate levels/mods for what they are rather than getting a different baseline experience.

neat

Meant to say that this felt like it had no use like the standard D4 shotgun, not that the Gatling Rotator invalidates the shotgun.

>>
>>344630686
The PDW was an SMG? I must have missed that. And don't get me wrong, I like Doom 3. It just feels a lot more like "Doom: SIDE STORY" then "Doom: NUMBERED TITLE" to me.

>>344630687
I would say he's very protective of humanity. That scene at the beginning where he cracks his knuckles after looking at the dead guy while Ultron says it was all worth it was one of the best character solidifying moments I've seen in a game in the last decade or two.
>>
>>344626434

You're a UAC marine in Doom 1 and 2. DOOM specifically states you were born at the beginning of time in hell or some shit.
>>
Fuck me the platforming is atrocious.

Half of my deaths are just him not grabbing a platform that I'm not 100% perfectly aligned to and he falls to his death.
>>
>>344630991
Original Doom supported the mouse completely.

Same for Wolfenstein.
They had mouseturning and movement, but not mouselooking.

Speedrunners make a lot of use out of mouse movement by the way, it allows a lot of tricks
>>
>>344630991

John Romero L I T E R A L L Y had a mouse during the development of Doom
>>
>>344630903
That's exactly what I was thinking, he doesn't say anything but all of his movements make it look like he's frustrated or something at being fed bullshit about what happened like it was a bad pr stunt

Especially when you have to deactivate the three energy tanks, and you just stomp the shit out of them while Mister Roboto throws a tantrum in the background.

DOOMguy's seen this shit before. It never works out well.
>>
>>344630687

I dont know anon given that this is a different doom guy as it has been fucking stated multiple times.

Original doom guy was superman levels of good

Doom 3 probably just wants to survive

This doomguy, for all we know, doesn't even knows what humanity, he just knows hell is a threat for all life.

>>344630521

Thats actually not that bad of a decision since it was probably made to not render the pistol useless after getting other guns, also it might deal less damage than the pistol but it obviously shoots 50 times faster so that compensates. A LOT of SMGs in game work like that, shit damage but great DPS

>>344630903

The PDW is prety much a P90 with a shitty lcd bullet display, it even has that upper mag insertion

>>344630991

It did used the mouse, you just couldn't move it vertically.

>>344631020

DOOMguy wasnt born in hell, he was from "the argent realm", an elite knight over there. Hell in DOOM absorbs dimensions and adds it as regions. So the argent realm was eventually absorbed into hell and thus DOOMguy was in hell too.

>>344631072

Platforming is incredibly smooth, what the hell are you talking about?

>>344631130

Yeah he seems pretty pissed, probably because his entire world fell to demons.

>>344631195

The doomguy from 1 and 2 is a space marine, this one is some sort of mystical knight with a power suit
>>
>>344631867

He was pretty fucking pissed at that in particular.

Okay, so are you dudes going with center weapon or just leave it as is? I'm kinda liking center except for when I get close to walls
>>
>>344624579
In Doom 1, it's mentioned that he goes to hell and is still in his human form because his soul can't be absorbed. In game, this makes sense with respawns and why they had to trap him rather than kill him. If they killed him, his soul would just float around until it got another host or reincarnated and started beating the shit out of everyone again.
>>
>>344632521
I turned it on, played for a bit, and turned it off. I was all for it going in, but in practice something about centered weapons in full-rendered 3D just feels wrong to me, even though it's Doom and it should feel right.
>>
>>344632786

I mean, I played Unreal sometimes with Center Weapon display but something about D44M and Center Weapons don't work right for some reason. I get a bit of a kick out of it when I try for the classic maps though.
>>
>>344632521
Center, no other way.

Now if they implement a Face HUD, this game would be even better.

Mostly because I want to see the difference between Doom guy's and DOOM SLAYER'S face.
>>
>>344629586
>>344629224
With mastery, the chaingun motor is far more ammo efficient than turret mode while doing almost as much damage (It feels like 2/3rds- 3/4s of the damage while using half as much ammo). I wrote it off at first too but I used it far more than turret mode once I got mastery.

I'm trying to plan out what mods I'm gonna go for mastery on for my Ultra-Nightmare run, I'm thinking
>Pistol might get a pity point for the first two levels, but maybe not
>Shotgun gets 1 point for bigger boom grenades
>Plasma gets nothing, stun is good enough
>Machinegun gets scope mastery
>Chaingun gets motor mastery
>SS mastery ASAP
>Rocket lock on mastery (because I don't want to accidentally suicide with remote det)
>Gauss siege/scope mastery
>>
>>344632858

That reminds me, remember when you get gibbed in Classic Maps and when you see the helmet roll towards you you see Ol' Doomguy's face still grinning like a motherfucker?

Yes... Not a word spoken, but you can hear his thoughts, feel his measure as a man.

He sees humanity suffering to the same thing that destroyed his people, because one of their own betrayed them too thinking they could get a good deal out of it...
