The game is going places to collect items, finding Pokemon and catching them (how you throw your Pokeballs changes how likely you are to catch the Pokemon.)
There is still weakness and resistance so there is team planning and the battles aren't totally automatic. There are 2nd tier moves that charge from the regular attacks and a dodge mechanic you can use.
It's a game, at it's very core. It's not a very deep game, but it's still a game.
