The one thing i'd be willing to concede is that the shots in the gravemind cutscene where you can see the gravemind's whole body ruin the lovecraftian element to it where you never got to see how big it actually was.

A lot of what Staten (who was bungie's main writer for the halo games, and alongside nylund, basically invented halo's lore, and especially planned out all the inner workings of the covenant) had in plan with Truth got cut and changed between halo 2 and 3. In the end of the book that bridges halo CE and halo 2, for instance, Tartarus brings him the remains of a forerunner slispace crystal, ominously says "this will be enough for our purposes", then orders tartarus to assassinate all the people who gathered the pieces.

Mercy was guaranteed a spot among them as the third hierach to shut him up, though Mercy was actually religious, and you can even note that in some of his dialog in Halo 2, when MC finds him being attacked by the flood infection form, he even says that "this time, none of you will be left behind", with him intending that once the rings get activated, humanity will finally be reunited with the forerunners.

I mean, I think to some degree there was truth (heh) in the reasoning that it would break the covenant apart, especially for regret and mercy (again, mercy was very religous and likely would have put humanity in charge of the covenant if it were totally up to him), but for truth, it was probably 90% him wanting the power for himself, maybe 10% for the good of the covenant.
Anyways, I recommend reading the novel itself. It's one of the better ones, and staten wrote it, so it ties in a fuck ton to Halo 2 and the sublte lore sutff in there. It also goes into Johnson and Tartarus's origins a good amount.

Canonically, there were memebers of all species on both sides of the conflicts in Halo 3; but for the purpose of gameplay, they only showed elites on your side to not confuse you.
That said, outside of very, very few exceptions, Brutes/prophets were all with the loyalists, and elites were with the seprtatists/humanity. Jackals and drones were mostly with loyalists, Grunts/hunters were pretty evenly split, siding with whomever they happened to be assigned to at the time.

This explains there weird motorcycle cars in halo 3 because they saw our motorcycles and loved the idea and it was actually made as a gift for humans before we were branded heretics.
They also love our designs and even use human shotguns in halo 2 as well as human designed grenades for there grenade launcher

It may be that Truth knew the Ark was out of range of the Halo array and planned to wipe the galaxy clean and start fresh with the surviving Covenant with him. They would return to a now lifeless galaxy and claim it as their own, they would shape it's future and decide how life will continue. Halo as a story and concept is pretty great actually. It definitely feels unique and the enemies are a nice colored contrast to the sort of generic starship trooper humans.
The problem was always the gameplay; the two weapon limits, regenerating shields,and slow floaty controls.
But even with that the first 3 games are still great, they just were part of the reason the genre fell apart completely and became mediocre trash.

I'm going to bed so I can't debate it further now, but many, many characters get taken out in halo by chance or due to bad luck and they die in vain. Halo has never shied away from showing that side of war and how shitty it is, and I find the concept that a character deserves a certain type of death just because of popularity disgusting and totally antithetical to everything I love about the lore.
Also, him dying narratively has no negative impact. Saves him from becoming an S4 and ruining what makes him cool, and they can still go back and make new stories about cool shit he did as an ODST (like what he did in the one evolutions story). I wanted to point this, that while every human being fear the unknown, even more, if you think about it, we're afraid every fucking second of our existence. But, like that phrase says "The brave is afraid, but he just shakes it and keeps going" or something like that, I mean, if we let fear overcome us, we couldn't even go to the bathroom.
Lot of people are doom and gloom about 343, but I have faith. They've been getting better.
They've nailed the multiplayer now, the music got a lot better too, and the campaign while poorly written felt more gameplay oriented and less cinematic than 4's which I appreciated.
And 5's armor designs, while not on 3's level, were still a lot better than 4's armor designs (I didn't like Reach designs, I think they're mostly retarded desu, though some people love them). Forge is the best it's ever been, same with the potential of customs (unfortunately the lower population means less stuff though), and the shooting feels incredibly on point.
Now they just have to fix the writing and improve some of the designs a little bit more and they could make the best Halo yet (though no one would ever admit it because nostalgia).
Oh, and all future ones will be on PC which is nice.

I think the big thing was that the book came out before Halo 2 so the fact that ODST had a special uniform wasnt really a thing yet.
Before that they were implied to be just Marines that were attached to a more elite program with the only thing to make them look different is the division patch on the shoulders.

The shotgun (particullarly in Halo 1) just completely shut them down and 1 burst from the AR could kill like 15 infection forms.

That is actually one of the key reason why I was really disappointed in Reach and ODST (Though the main reason Reach is on my bad list is because of how poorly it fits in the lore)
When ODST and Reach was first announced I was really looking foward to seeing war that the marines see (I thought the original announcement of Reach would be from a Marine), the war torn ruins where Marines are doing whatever they can just to survive.
