well paced game with one of the only jrpg stories that treats it's teenage main chars like actual kids instead of god-crushing world savers.
Realistic relationships between chars, simple but fast battles, solid music.

The best one is Baten Kaitos: Origins, the prequel. Difficult, engaging, depth, fast, basically everything you want from gameplay.
Valkyrie Profile 1/2 and Grandia 2 and on have been my other favorite gameplay in the more "turn based" realm of JRPGs, but there's tons of solid games in the action rpg genre too.

Clives bonus quest is 20 hours, this is optional. his actual recruitment just requires you to walk in a certain alley early on in muse.

That should be it, most "early" missable characters give you a 2nd chance of recruiting em at a later date.
If you miss anita in muse, you NEED to get valeria(instead of kasumi) in the toran republic.
When you get the 2 crystals to talk to animals, make sure to only get the animals that count(there are extra animals that don't count).
Aside from that, the only missables are if you act like a giant cunt during recruitment events, which is 100% your fault anyway.

It's not really there. You recruit certain people and they open up a shop in a specific spot in your fort

Fucking amazing, going from a relatively shitty castle into a what, 7 story high castle with farms, a fucking cook-off minigame storyline arc, fishing, bigass shops, a detective area which gives you bonus info about people, gambling, giant barracks reflecting all the cities armies you recrutied and other shit is just damn impressive for a ps1 game.
The castle, despite being huge is quite practical and well designed, it's also like 10x bigger than the piece of shit you get in suikoden 3.

Clive is considered "permanently recruited" after you trigger his scene in muse and speak to him in south window after obtaining your castle.
The timed missions are just fanservice.
