Can you build?
If I destroy a planet or make a monument, will other people see it if they find that same planet ?
5 billion years from now when you're all tired of visiting the same planets over and over again in No Man's Sky I'll still be playing Space Engine where I've just finished exploring 1 galaxy out of hundreds of billions.

You have a lterally unlimited universe to explore with a literally unlimited amount of randomly generated planets to find. That means if you just look hard enough you'll literally find any planet you can think of. Always wanted a GTA San Andreas with a life size planet sized map? In No Man's Sky there is. Somewhere. Do you want a planet full of nude nymphomaniac preteens all craving cock? In No Man's Sky there is. Somewhere. Do you want a plkanet where Gabe Newell wasn't a hack and actually developed Half Life 3? In No Man's Sky there is. If you can find it.
I know "endless possibilities" is a buzz word thrown around a lot these days but in this game the possibilities truly are endless. Literally.

>>344550482

Yes. But the moment you leave the planet it is back to normal.
>>344549243
For whatever reason I feel unreasonably bothered with all the praise this game gets for it's huge scale.
Space Engine has been doing the whole "procedurally generated universe" thing for years, on a much bigger scale, and with much better graphics. Sure it has no gameplay, but I doubt the actual gameplay on No Man's Sky would be something to write about.Still gonna pirate it tho
>>344550845
Of course you can. And even if you knock up a dozen of them you can just leave the planet and come back and it has all been taken care off.

>>344549312

Huh. For some reason I thought MP was the focus of the game. Like it was going to be some EVE like MMO with people teaming up to build space stations and bases and a player driven economy and shit. If it's just me flying to planets by myself and anything I do on those planets resets when I leave them that sounds pretty boring.
>>344550554

This will ONCE AGAIN be one of those fucking hyped games that dont live up to the expectations because retards like you actually fall for that "OH SHIT 1 GORILLION PLANETS INFINITE CONTENT" bullshit.
I absolutely cannot wait until this game flops completely. It has all the classic hallmarks of an all puff, no huff crapfest. I predict in <5 exploring will be boring.
Unless they have interesting and extremely varied generated environments such as deep caves, underwater areas, dense jungles and other interesting environment types it's going to be crap.
So far in videos all you see are gentle rolling hills with red earth texture and "cool alien" grass.

>>344549243

>>344549243
The fact that it's procedurally generated makes this kind of a shitty point. Thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of planets are certain to be identical to each other, along with the lifeforms you find.
>>344555905
The thing is, it is so blatantly obvious, it is actually bait
>>344555895
this. even with procedural generation a 15 man team had to handcraft the assets that will populate the enormous map. which means a shit load of repetition aost immediately. it's why the devs refuse to show any unfiltered gameplay since it would ruin their one selling point of "a billion hours"
Do you think it just works?
>>344555968
>Thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of planets are certain to be identical to each other
Even if that were true, there's around 10 000 000 000 000 000 planets, so hundreds of thousands of planets looking identical is hardly a bother.
>>344555968
yea they can only randomize plants, trees and animals to an extent. No one can model infinite animal types.
I'm going to go with probably a dozen or two versions for small, medium & large animals.
>oh man that's awesome you got a purple version of my yellow animals!
>lmao this guy got two temples instead of one on a planet!
this is what "infinite content" means
>>344549243
>it's STILL not out
Do they keep pushing it back? I swear I heard it was out already
>>344556294
they randomize models somewhat as well. so you might get longer legs on one or extra horns on another. that's one of the shill selling points
>>344556205
I've got a pic here of what they can do with a single animal type here, if I understood it right, they have like, archetypes of skeletons or bodyparts, which they then twist around and recolor to create different species, so it's not like they created a dozen different type of cats and just litter the galaxy with it.

It is, but at the same time, it uses the same seed value, so nothing is random.

http://www.kotaku.co.uk/2016/03/03/you-can-do-much-more-than-fly-around-in-no-mans-sky
>Every planet in No Man's Sky has its own environmental weirdnesses. Of the four I landed on, one had toxic rain, one was freezing cold, one was super hot, and the last was relatively temperate. Your equipment – your space-suit – can only withstand a short amount of time in inclement places, so you have to find shelter soon after you step out of your ship. Or, you can make it.
>Your weapon in No Man's Sky can be modified to blast away terrain. You can create a hovel in the ground to shelter in, or dig through the surface of a planet to find beautiful caves below. Your modifications to the surface of planets are permanent – but bear in mind that the planets really are planet-sized, so a huge area that took you an hour to explore on foot is barely a pixel once you're back in orbit. I cannot understand how the game calculates this.
What'll probably happens is that the info are saved locally for you and if you go back and forth space and the planet, whatever hole you'll make isn't going to go away, except maybe once you leave the solar system (unless, I heard, if it's a big change like a space station being destroyed), and in that case it's irrelevant because you're not going to go back there anyway.

I remember them saying there would be hundreds of these skeletons, and that they were only showing the most familiar ones at the edge of the galaxy, since they didn't want to spoil the game. Supposedly, lifeforms get more alien and hostile as you get closer to the center, which I think also means that new creature archetypes appear. Like I said, they haven't shown anything particularly unnatural in-game, but here's some concept art.

Well crafted levels have nothing to do with procedural generation since you usually have to make shit to be generated beforehand. Unless it's some space engine tier shit.
Shit like Xenoblade is literally "hand crafted" nothingness. As are most JRPG maps.
Case in point: Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. Randomly generated, but still has man-made structures which fit the game. Procedural generation, once again, has nothing to do with being "well crafted".

>>344571028
Goal: Get to the center of the universe, you start on the edge
Gameplay loop is collecting resources, trading, discovering things and uploading those discoveries and other shit I forget so that you can upgrade your ship, suit and mining tool that doubles as a gun to move closer to the center. Shit gets werider and more hostile the closer you get to the center, which is why the upgrades are necessary. I think there are factions too, and alien NPCs with languages you need to learn through artifacts on planets to be able to successfully interact with them
>>344557682
you hit the nail anon, this is how it's ALWAYS been
procedurally generated = zero level design
minecraft/terraria did it well, with interesting cave systems with randomly sparsed loot to keep you coming back.
i expect this game to turn out like starbound, boring map generation with little deviance between planets, and no real item-progression system
