Nep U had a big memorable fuck-up - in one scene they've localized transformed Nep in the same manner as the regular one. It was hilariously out of place with how different are their speech patterns.

Oh well that's a bit different. Editors are a must on any project with writing. My team has a dedicated editor on it as well. But unless you have a shitty team they should have limited control over your lines, it isn't meant to betray the tone of the original text or become too liberal an interpretation. I know that I was in contact with my editor for the entirety of the editing process, he would ask me questions about specific lines and I would help him out.
That doesn't mean the initial translation is rough or done very directly, a translator should always rely on their own intuition and writing ability, so it doesn't come out too rigid or too liberal. An editor's job is to buff out any of the kinks that might've slipped through the cracks, it's a very connected process most of the time.
If a translation has come out shittily, more often than not it's the fault of the translator and their decisions, an editor can only do so much.
