Thats the nx controller. You use it on the home console, and you can take it with you.
A lot of games will come with a 2d and 3d version like smash brothers.
Mario kart and the new 3d mario will release with 2d versions of the game.
Wii u amiibo wont work. You will have to buy them all again because the nx has a different npc chip. Thanks jewtindo

You need a thick body to accommodate analog sticks so it ruins the portability somewhat.
The vita tried making the sticks smaller but they weren't great.
Circle Pads are an acceptable compromise but you're right that there needs to be 2 of them.
Also i don't like the nub, it's even more unwieldy than a circle pad.
