I wouldn't mind living in Whiterun if the NPCs were all replaced. I remember the first time I saw Whiterun...
Skyrim was my first TES game. I had just finished that spooky barrow quest for the Riverwood trader and he tells me to walk down the path to Whiterun. By then it was already dusk. So I head down the path still feeling a bit spooked from the draugr I encountered earlier, not really knowing what to expect, when I see it in the distance. The lights all lit up against the moonlit sky. You know how Skyrim nights near Whiterun are, it's just tall grass as far as the eye can see (at least how I remember it) with the mountains looming in the distance. It was just a flat plains, and felt like the largest outdoor playing field ever. It wasn't lonely either, there were actually random NPCs fighting a giant right outside.

I disagree somewhat. I remember when it came out everyone was impressed with the graphics, personally I hadn't seen such good use of bump maps in many games either. The biggest problem nowadays I think is that the game features no anisotropic filtering option at all, but it desperately needs it to not be a blurry/muddy mess. Here's a screenshot that's vanilla but AA and AF forced only.

Yep. The newest game in the series that doesn't hold your hand as far as navigating goes is Morrowind, which most casuals accuse of being too archaic to properly play because they're ADHD and don't care about getting immersed in the world as long as they can kill shit nonstop.

Morrowind's fanbase is a bit too annoying for my taste. Maybe one day I'll get over it and attempt the vanilla game. In the meantime, Arena and Daggerfall hit the spot for me. Kind of a shame that Bethesda lost their vision so badly. From one of the most open and "complete" RPGs available, to a streamlined shooter. I mean complete here in the sense that the games tried to be more than standard RPG combat, and actually had the whole world and society be part of the role playing, and that the game relied very little on meta gaming. NPCs would talk to you like an in-world character, acknowledge you like an in-world character, and give you all the info an in-world character needs, without resorting to interactive maps or nonsense.

Oblivion is not realistic. I don't think it's supposed to be realistic either. It has a very specific painting-like palette and texture style to it. The simple trees in my opinion fit that style. I'm pretty sure it was still them being fairly incapable with their tools, Bethesda have quite a track record in that regard, but this particular aspect, to me, works out for the game
