i skipped to 3 without playing 1&2 or reading any of the books. enjoying it and not hugely lost on plot shit.would def be better if I had known all these characters but whatever

No. The sequels are fucking consolized shit compared to TW1.
TW1 was goddamn AMAZING, and actual PC RPG.
To be honest, if you read the books and jump straight to 3 you will get much more out of it than someone who just played the previous games. They don't really matter and only a handful of characters from previous games are in.
That being said I really enjoyed Witcher 1 so maybe you should give it another chance.

I enjoyed 1 a lot, but hated 2. Characters and story felt so drastically different, it was ugly and combat was still shit, it just took much longer and was easier to die so it was more tedious.

In other words the UI is irredeemably shit for no reason.
Witcher 2 is better as a game, if that matters to you then sure.
