But they didn't. That's why Snake just kind of blows off the mention of her in 2, and by 4 he's literally dying so Kojima paired her up with the worst character in the history of everything, because he clearly secretly hated her.
To be perfectly honest, I would have been happier if they just used the ending of MGS where she was dead when Snake reaches her. At least that would have spared her the indignity, and it sets up Snake and Otacon as bros for life.

You're grossly simplifying their interactions in MGS1. The first code call is a 7 minute conversation alone. When you meet up with her they learn about each other, with Meryl opening up and Snake comforting her as well as telling her "you're a soldier act like it."

They're interactions are great, I just think it would've worked a lot better without the romance. I think the dynamic would've been a lot better if Snake was more concerned about her because of Campbell and her inexperience. Him feeling responsible for her injuries/death, and his change of heart about how he looks at life and relationships would work just as well if not better without the romance.

Basically Snake and Meryl live together for a while after MGS1, they break up because Meryl wants more in life than milling around Alaska doing nothing, gets involved with some terrorists trying to find out what happened to her dad or something, then she's the final boss of the story. The story is all told through text that breaks up large portions of pure stealth gameplay, if you really like MGS's gameplay I'd highly recomend getting MGS:HD or MGS2:Substance and playing the VR missions, and Snake Tales. They're pretty great additions.

Snake and Meryl didn't work out because Snake is difficult to be around, and doesn't even in love, doesn't really like depending on others or opening up, so their relationship broke down.
While Jhonny and Meryl was sorta dumb, the idea of it sorta grew on the community. It's nice that those two characters got "something" nice out of all that.
