Doom 4 is pretty much just Doom 1 with better graphics and more in-depth game mechanics, which aren't really that great.
It's pretty much all I wanted. It doesn't have linear corridors, it has power-ups, there's no limit on how many weapons you can hold, there's a lot of secrets hidden throughout the levels, it's about as old-school as you can get in the modern gaming market.

I did. I enjoyed them very much and aside from the modern day FPS design it's very much Doom. Doom was never anything more than point and shoot, only now you have complete aim.
The executions are a stupid new mechanic and are a big hindrance as they leave you vulnerable. But it's completely ignorable so it's a minor complaint at best.

It's good but I wouldn't say it's everything that I wanted. It's a lot better than I was expecting.
The levels are more linear, especially towards the end. The scripted arenas come up far too often.
The monsters are less focused on projectiles, but their behaviours have been changed to effectively compensate for the lower monster count.
The pseudo RPG mechanics are a pointless and needless addition. Powerups would fit the gameplay far better.
The health and armour system is dumbed down. While the lack of multiple armour types makes sense in lore, the changing of the armour absorption to 100% is an unnecessary change.
The monsters dropping health and armour is neatly explained in lore, but it's way too easy to rely on health drops alone. I'd much rather it just be a little buff while health packs are your primary source.

I don't just mean "have a lot of enemies." Encounters in 1 and 2 often had somewhat unique enemy variety and composition. Not every room had a handful of imps, a handful of zombies, a handful of revenants, a handful of cacodemons, a handful of etc etc. Also tougher enemies in 4 aren't that much tankier than the tougher enemies in 1 or 2.
I don't think the verticality adds anything to a fight either because of the way the game is; the best way to avoid damage since projectiles are so fast and you're usually surrounded is to just constantly keep moving, since nothing will hit you. Being attacked from above or below or going under a bridge or something doesn't really matter at that point.

Doom 4 isn't exactly like Doom 1 or 2, biggest thing that comes to my mind being the closed arena fights, but it is the most fun I've had with a FPS campaign in a long while. I am more than happily looking forward to a DOOM 5.
If you think I have shit taste, then feel free to recommend me FPSes you think have better campaigns, I wouldn't mind trying out others in the hopes of finding something better.

You should watch his Behind the Music stuff he did for Doom. It's fucking awesome and really shows exactly how much freedom he had. When the music of Doom 4 kicks in it's really great aggressive powerful fucking music that it should be. I think people just get bummed out because the music doesn't work the same way as it did in the original Doom games where every level had one theme that played nonstop, where as Doom 4 uses its music to accentuate the action, so when it's slow the music is slow and when shit is getting nuts the music goes balls out. I can understand that, but people who have an issue with the actual soundtrack I am confused about, because there pretty much could not be a better way to make a modern metal soundtrack to Doom. Mick Gordon did basically the best thing you could do, which is some really crunchy guitars even going as far as to use a 9 string guitar just so he could get as low and thunderous as possible combining in really smashing aggressive industrial pounding mixed in with some of those MIDI elements from the original game to round out the sound into a sort of sci fi sound using static noise and signwaves to give the feeling of falling apart and barely holding together.
