Probably the best large budget MMO on the market right now.
It's not your typical WoW clone. It's got Skyrims gameplay but improved. It gets rid of the trinity and allows actual character customization. End game isn't a gear treadmill and based on your build there is a whole bunch of viable sets. Dungeons actually have good designs and various mechanics, hell they're not even all instance based.
It started out really shit, but has gotten significantly better recently. It still suffers from a lot of MMO syle quests, but that is the only really bad thing about it.

What you're calling expansions are really just major patches. For those who don't know, you can either buy content updates or you get them for free for subscribing. ESO "DLC" is usually another zone very similar to the 20 or so that launched with the game and maybe one dungeon.

How do I play WHM without shitting myself? I have it at 40 and I cannot for the life of me heal, position, pay attention to status effects, and DPS without sweating bullets unless it's a normal pull. It might have just been because of Cutter's Cry and its sandsplosions all over the place but I fucked up royally last time, especially at the final boss. Haven't healed in two months because of that.

Do you use a controller? For some reason I get stressed out healing on a controller. Keyboard+Mouse makes everything way easier with mouseover macros and focus target healing.

You drop a Regen, start dpsing and briefly pop out of cleric stance whenever someone needs a heal. All you have to do is stay aware of what your party is doing and know when big damage spikes are coming. WHM is entirely about situational awareness.

Have Regen up on the tank always during fights (don't apply it before a pull through or you'll rip aggro). Cure when the tank is around 75%. Use Cure II only in emergencies. Presence of Mind and Divine Seal are your oh-shit buttons.
Honestly if you keep Regen up you should have a ton of time to DPS in cleric stance.

For most fights this is completely unnecessary. You can easily wait until the tank is at sub 50%, even 30% if you can tell they aren't shit. With Asylum and Tetragrammaton and a competent group, you can get through most pulls with 2-3 GCDs used on healing and just dps the rest of the time.

Never spam Cure 2. Either use it in emergencies, when you get a Freecure proc or if you know you can regen your mp between packs and just want to get the tank healed quickly so you can dps more. Divine Seal, Regen and Cure are your best friends at low levels. At higher levels, Asylum and Tetragrammaton make your healing even more MP efficient.

I played wow from 2004 to 2014 religiously, primarily for the lore, exploration, and Pvp. Recently I tried Guild Wars 1, then ultimately 2, and fell in love with the world. The writing is a little crappier in 2, but the world more than makes up for it. The PvP is alright - I mostly do Wvw which is a persistent world Pvp - but the leveling is the best there is. 1-80 is free right now. If you need to scratch the itch, this might do it.
That being said, I know a lot of people who can't get into it, so it's very subjective.

Healing is all about multi-tasking yourself.
You pop a regen on the tank, DPS for a bit, watch out for your tank HP, if it get drain too quickly switch back to heal, or just watch for when Regen is off to put it again.
When you know that status effects needs to be cleansed just watchout for their HP bars on the group, the statue effect will always appear first on the line of buff/debuff.
DPS as much as you can while healing too, everyone in the party will be thankful to you!

It certainly killed any desire I had to continue playing FF14. Mostly because each patch is like 2 hours of walking around doing meaningless fetch quests, followed by queuing for something no one really does anymore. Then repeating that for every single incremental patch. Spending hours to get maybe 3 lines of story is passable when it's brand new and you have nothing else to do, but doing it back to back just to get to anything worthwhile is soul crushing.

The only part of the game that even remotely comes close to being anything reminiscent of a spreadsheet is market trading. Comparing buy and sell values, margines, and volume all comes down to the market hub you're at which is effectively an excel spreadsheet. Other than that the game has no other spreadsheet type mechanics. The PVP doesn't revolve around any spreadsheets, PVE certainly doesn't. Exploration, Wormholes and every other gameplay in the game has no real spreadsheet at all to it. Much of the time you'll be looking at third party applications for things like optimization of your ship fits and creating efficient industry models.
The game isn't like other MMO's. EVE doesn't spoon feed you content because all the content in EVE is player based. There are no servers, theres only one server. There are no waiting for groups and there are no themepark raids and bullshit. Its all player based and the content of the game revolves heavily around the players going out to make it with their tools. The game is also extremely PVP centric and where a lot of casuals fall short is the fact that they are always going to be exposed to PVP and there are no safe spaces for them to cower.

Hell in other MMO's when you die theres almost no consequence to dying at all. In EVE when you die you lose your ship and/or your pod with your implants. Once its gone you have to go get another one.
In other MMO's they rely on PVE and PVP servers. In EVE there is no space you are immune from PVP and High Security space is not a PVP-free zone. You have no guarantee to safety which is the ultimate casual filter. Some people still believe that they're entitled to safety and never leave high-sec at all ever but they are the biggest filthy casuals of the game that suffer the most. Unlike other games, EVE revolves entirely around Player vs Player interaction of all sorts. EVE is also one of the few games with a real economy. The fuck are you talking about? Login Queues are server-specific. No other server on Balmung's datacenter shares these login queues. Balmung's new char creation is closed 23hrs 58mins a day, 7 days a week. Gilgamesh's opens plenty, no other server there has that restriction nearly ever. In fact I've never had a login queue for my Gilgamesh alt, but even at odd hours there's at least a 6person login queue on Balmung.
Duty Finder queues are cross-server. That's it.

New players compete very well in this game now. There are more opportunities to do well than ever before now that skills and technology aren't limited to just older players. So basically, don't play FF14 for gameplay, play it for the other things like making friends and exploring the world(s) together. Creating memories, etc.
I don't know, honestly I'm a combat whore. I already dealt with this once in PSO2 -excepting Sega to focus on gameplay content.
