Plot twist, Huey is threatened to trick Mario to collect all the Paint Stars to make the true villain (or probably Bowser) all powerful. During our adventure we bond with him & he sacrifices himself (and doesn't come back like Kersti did) to make Mario all power making us cry like Tabata says we're all do. Highly doubtful anything like that (as simple as it may sound) will happen.

Maybe it's just because I actually like playing games unlike most of /v/.
That said, paper mario was my favorite game in my childhood, and TTYD was the main reason why I got a gamecube.
To see these games die and become what they are is still painful to me. Sure it was baby's first RPG, but it was still a great experience back then for me. TTYD expanded on that.
Super was alright. Beat it in a day or two. Story was good but gameplay was meh.
I bought sticker star at launch mislead by the beta screens with the chain chomp partner and other stuff. I admit it was an ok experience, but compared to the other games it was really weak.

Even if it was looking similar, something about the beta had a charm the old PM games had.
Maybe it's the battle arena. Maybe it is the art style of the battle backgrounds. But it is better than what sticker star ended up being.
Also pokeys weren't NSMB yet, which means it still had a bit of originality.

Funny Anon, they mentioned partners were fully implemented early in development & stickers were originally just meant for puzzles here & there. Over time they had more & more focus on the stickers including it in the battles (as we see there) and eventually dropped the partners & exp aspects (essentially starting from scratch) to put full focus on the sticker mechanic. Also I mentioned how it would be weak to begin with, it still looked better than what we got though.

I think it looks good enough as it is for that, with only the text boxes so far not being part of the game's style. (My favorite thing is the vines holding up the battle options).

Partners are complicated because apparently a lot of partner stuff is hard coded in game.
The maker mentioned that if you were dedicated enough, you could probably jury rig it (replacing sprites, dialogue, moves, etc) but even then he has no idea how overworld partner abilities functions so that's a limit.
He did mention there is a "spare" partner slot in the games code that someone might be able to use with enough work.

Have you ever read his tooltips and conversations? He was basically the really booksmart squire that looked up to you. Gombella mostly made vapid comments,flirt or say useful info half of the time she had to say something about how pretty or ugly something is. Probably a lack of interest. A lot of popular games don't get much attention when it comes to rom hacking. Most of the time it's Super Mario World & Super Mario 64. Other semi-popular/known ones are A Link to the Past, Super Metroid & Super Mario Bros and all of those besides SM64 are 2D so 3D is even harder to do.

It's a tough choice, the threads are generally torn on that. TTYD adds a shitload to the battle formula and has a grander story & characters. You'll most likely like it if you like the original, it suffers from backtracking though at points. Still a very great game though.

People are gonna call me bait or whatever but I genuinely think N64 paper mario is horrible compared to the sequel.

Combat is way too simple, in particular partners are very under developed

It has too much talking to just be an action/adventure game but not nearly enough talking for it to be interesting or worth the time spent

Majority of the levels are straight lines where you walk from left to right and somtimes theres a secondary path where you still walk left to right. toy box and flower fields break up the pattern by letting you walk left OR right in a straight line

There's basically no exploration or sidequesty stuff you expect from an rpg. There's the sewers (expanded heavily in the sequel) and like two bonus bosses

It's an RPG with extremely limited and shallow RPG mechanics, it's a story game with a story just barely more complicated then super mario world and it's an exploration/adventure game without any real puzzles or exploration on top of being on the worst nintendo system ever made.

The only real defense people have for it are to shit on the sequel when PM64 is itself an extremely disappointing sequel to SMRPG or talk about how "comfy" it is as if that means anything.

The mainline Mario series has a massive range of characters. And to be honest the designs of the Mario enemies that have never been in any of the RPGs are better than the 100% unique characters Intelligent Systems made for the Paper Mario games.

+/- Tattle is invaluable when first playing the game or if playing blind, and the character this one free move imparted is a source of much fondness for the PM series. However, it isn't necessary for certain team builds or replays, can be made redundant with foreknowledge and the Peekaboo badge, and ultimately means Goombella only has three combat skills to bring to the table when all other partners have four

- All attacks make exposed contact, leaving Goombella very vulnerable to fire, spikes, electricity and rarer hazards (Charged Puffs, Bob-ombs with lit fuses); as Goombella deals damage in multiple contacting blows, contact hazards will interrupt her attacks and massively reduce her damage
- Overall low damage, no statuses or special effects

Koops

+ Only partner with native defense, coming in handy as a shield
+ Ignores most contact hazards when attacking due to shell
+ Can strike all ground and low-hovering enemies cheaply with Power Shell

+/- Bulky Bob-ombs and Bob-ulks are set off by Bobbery's attacks, which will in turn set off every other one on the field. This can cause possibly large amounts of damage to the party, but also finishes off these threats potentially before they charge up and become fully dangerous and finishes off other enemies as well. Once these foes have fully charged, Bobbery is a liability as he cannot deal non-explosive damage.

Yeah, it's a mechanism used for farming SP and coins in both games. Only works on enemies MADE of fire, like Lava Bubbles.

Love Slap hits the target enemy multiple times, but only the final slap deals damage. The audience dislikes it whenever one of the team's moves deals no damage, so those warmup slaps actually elicit boos from the audience and causes some to flee. You only get like 3 bits of star power from a typical audience after using Love Slap, it's brutally harmful if you're trying to build up the gauge for a power.

How much of this was deliberate on the designer's part is hard to say, but it's a cool feature for a partner nonetheless. Ms. Mowz is meant to be pretty annoying, and it seems the audience agrees.

Combat system with stickers was one of Tanabe's ideas. If Shiggy really said it was just too much like TTYD or not, it doesn't matter, because SS was already in danger with Tanabe.

Miyamoto had NOTHING to do with SS's development, except give some suggestions, and that's it. Tanabe is definitely the one to blame, not Miyamoto.

In SMRPG, Smithy is known to be the final boss early on but he's not actually seen until the end.

In M&L1, Cackletta is seen in the beginning.
In M&L2, Princess Shroob is seen early on. Elder Princess Shroob isn't seen until the end but is hinted at throughout the game.
In M&L3, Fawful is seen at the beginning. The Dark Star isn't seen until halfway through the game.
In M&L4, Antasma is seen at the beginning. Bowser doesn't come up until a bit later.
In Paper Jam, Bowser and Paper Bowser are seen from the beginning.

In PM1, Bowser is seen at the beginning (introduction).
In PM2, Grodus is not seen until later on in the game (Chapter 1 interlude). The Shadow Queen only appears at the end but is hinted at throughout the game.
In PM3, Count Bleck is seen at the beginning (introduction). Dimentio is seen later on (Chapter 1).
In PM4, Bowser is seen at the beginning (introduction). If you consider Kamek and Bowser Jr. to be the true villains (since Bowser is out of his mind but they know what they're doing), they appear in Chapter 1.

So, this is what happens every time:

I imagined a Boomerang Bro could work the same way Kooper/Koops do, hitting distant switches, etc.

In battle you could throw the boomerang by inputting a button combo, then have it come back by inputting said combo in reverse order.

How about a Fire Bro instead? He could shoot flames in tiny holes or maybe over gaps to do some puzzles involving lighting things up. He could also burn things away to ashes on the overworld. I'm thinking one of his special attacks could be shooting multiple flames in the sky to hit multiple targets at once or something.
