Tales does not always do them well, though. Xillia 1's Chimeriad or whatever the fuck they were called were terrible. Not only was pretty much all of their backstory told through skits (like Drebin's terrible codec calls in MGS4), the actual backstory itself was usually boring or stupid as shit. Also they never seemed to actually fucking do anything aside from serve as a roadblock for you, a role they fulfilled fucking terribly because all of their fights were really fucking easy. They just walked around sucking Gaius' dick and being completely and utterly worthless, being unable to stand up both as characters in their own right and as foils or whatever the fuck their relation to the protagonists were supposed to be.

The writing in Xillia was a mess but Jude wasn't hit that badly by it. He's a fifteen year old med student whose overly demanding father pushed him to expect too much of himself. As a result he tries hard to be mature but he's obviously just a kid in many ways, which can usually be seen in his skits with Alvin. Being infatuated with Milla was hardly creepy seeing as fifteen is pretty much the exact age at which a kid like Jude would go to such ridiculous lengths for a crush.
Also he's not a CQC expert but he did study some form of martial arts, as is pointed out by pretty much everything Leia ever says about their childhood.
