I couldn't find this shit in Akiba. And I went into every single building that looked like a store.

I saw a lot of porn. But nothing as ridiculous as used panty vending machines. I'm pretty sure that's red light district stuff and not Akiba stuff.
>>
>>344390278
why is it people always ask about panty vending machines when it comes to japan anyways? That's as ignorant as assuming all Asians wear rice paddy hats.
>>
>>344390278
can you please go into an alley and look for ganguro sluts

Why don't you to go the better version called Den Den Town (Osaka) ?

also that is a lot of Persona copies

I was in Akihabara 2 weeks ago, is a fucking Chinese shit hole in the centre of Japan.

The only cool thing was the Super Potato building and a strange garage sale who sold lcd screens for less than 30$.

Den Den Town as NOTHING to do with gaming. Is an OTAKU shit hole, fulled with major company mals like Animate.

The only good shop for gaming in Japan is Bookoff.

I bought a game for 120 ¥.
>>
>>344390886

>>
>>344390909
Where'd you try VR in Akihabara?
>>
>>344390965
Speak for yourself, there are lots of video games store here, and with a lot of vidya at reasonable prices.
>>
>>344390847
Im travelling cheap, only cost like 2500 yen on the accommodation, capsules/hostels.

Went to the gundam cafe and that was a bit pricey, like 950 for a meal.

>>344390886
Sure m8, where you want to meet? I get lost easy.
>>
kill yourself in public
>>
>>344390909
that depends on the person actually, VR is blurry as hell for my dad too.
>>
>>344390765
Super potato is neat, but a little overpriced. Also good luck finding a specific game because stuff is sorted alphabetically by moonrunes. It's good for picking up random unpopular games for cheap, as a novelty just to try out, but if you want rare games you'll pay a shitload for them there. They have good merch though.
>>
>>344391148
I don't remember too much about what's in Akihabara. How about by the station? What do you look like?

Look for cosplayers and take pictures of them.

Video game related if you can.
>>
OP get a Real Gold for me. Fuck me, that was the tastiest drink available in vending machines. Pepsi Refresh Shot is popular in akihabara too, pick up one of those.

When I went to japan basically everyone ignored my friend and I. And we're obviously foreign, both about 2 meters tall and white. Real big dudes, no one seemed to care or interact with us. Staff an business were all nice and accommodating. If I had to brand the japanese anything, it would be polite. Definitely not engaging and friendly though. Only at bars did we see that kind of stuff.

>>
FIRTHY GAIJINU GO HOME
>>
>>344393212
Arcades are all over the place in tokyo and they're all pretty lively, but you have to be mindful of what brand they are (Sega, Taito, etc). Most of the time you won't get much variety, certain companies stock the same games in all their arcades based on what's popular. Medal/slot/chance games are really popular too. Medal games were fun as fuck. 80% of the arcade games are going to use a card membership service, which means without a card you'll be unable to save data and can only play the tutorial levels against bots. Competitive arcade games are the most popular ones in japan I'd say.

If you want a really cool arcade, go to the top floor of the mall in Odaiba Island. The one with the gundam statue in front, you can't miss it. Theres a monster hunter medal game there thats fun as fuck.

It seems like every 4 to 5 years 4chan under goes a changing of the guard. What used to link all of 4chan together in the beginning was the love of Japanese culture. Today its mostly memes and only memes.

Nara park, where a fuckload of wild deer roam. These motherfuckers will crowd you the moment you have food in your hand.

Interestingly, Nara Park is where Violet City from pokemon is IRL, and there is the only place you could find a stantler.

Just by chance. First week I was there I signed up on a kind of "talk to japanese" site, came into contact with a girl and we met at a nearby train station a few days later. She was in Canada for a year so she spoke some decent English, showed me around tokyo tower and the area and we had some food. It just went from there.

>>344399050
I think it's just something you should experience once.
I went to a normal maid cafe too, but that was much earlier on when I spoke extremely little Japanese and it was awkward. Mostly so because I felt like an idiot for not being able to talk to my maid who did magic tricks to make my food more delicious and shit.
>>
>>344398870
Even ugly white men will quickly find themselves surrounded by girls. Note that Japanese GFs tend to be some of the worst girls on offer, they're basically looking for free English lessons or to have a white boyfriend as a fashion accessory.

You probably won't have to pay child support when she divorces you and you're forced out of the country, but you'll never see your kids again. Which is probably a bonus, hafus are the worst and creating one should be grounds for immediate sterilization.

Kyoto was pretty easily my favourite part of Japan. When I stayed there last we had an AirBnB house on the slope leading up to Kiyomizu temple, it was just magnificent. I loved leaving the window open and listening to/watching the summer rain.

Tokyo's nice and all, especially for the easy access to basically everything + weeb stuff + being able to try a new food place pretty much every day for the rest of your life, but I think I preferred Kyoto overall. Except the prevalance of pachinko.

Not for me.
A lot of tourists traps, fuckin sky high rocket prices for anything.
A lot of otaku shit I just don't care.
Laox stores who are made just for Chinese and Korean tourists.

Kyoto is more "family".
It has more things to see, and more nature to explore.
The wildeness is amazing.
And also in Osaka you can found the same "fashion" of Tokyo, with more folklore, less weebshit and at more reasonable prices.

Tokyo is overated by western Otakus who don't know shit about Japan.

People who have visited Japan, how long would you reccomend staying? I'm saving up money to go after I graduate, since I dropped my japanese major to a minor and wont get to stay in Japan for an extended ammount of time now. 2 weeks seems like enough time to go from hokkaidou to Fukuoka visiting the big cities for a couple of days, but I worry that is way to rushed. I also probably need like 10 grand to do it, but I feel like once I graduate I will never have time again.
>>
>>344399370
To each their own. But Kyoto is just a tourist magnet so if you really want the things you are describing I don't think you mean Kyoto.

Tokyo is fucking huge though. You sound like you are just describing Aki, Rippongi(fucking gross ass area), Shibuya or Shinjuku.

But why not just teach English out here for a year, or do study abroad? Live out here for a year and then scram? It's better than 2 weeks.

Btw I would not recommend teaching English for any longer than 2 years at the maximum threshold. You will lose your mind, and any sparkly feelings you felt towards Japan.

>>344399484
If you want to actually go to all the places you can, you need like 3 weeks or even 4. I spent 2 weeks in Japan and only did Tokyo and Kyoto and it didn't feel like enough time. If you're moving even MORE than that... I don't even want to think about it. Definitely spend a little longer than you think you need, and don't plan shit, just let the wind carry you.

Also, it's not as expensive as you think it'll be. Get the best deal you can on flights, but after that you can actually stay pretty cheaply, and as an Australian I found food exceptionally cheap, but if you're American you might not think so. I only spent maybe $4,000 Australian on the trip for two weeks, and we stayed in some nice hotels.

Whe where talking about fucking Tokyo and you came up whit another place in another prefecture.

Are you fucking kidding me ?

You are the one with zero meaning of proper speaking in a discussion.

For directly answer to your question:
I did not went to Yokohama because I don't like it, since I discovered with Tokyo and Osaka, I'm not very into the big Japanese cities, because they all ressamble the Chinese cities.

And I hate the Chinese cities.
They are messy and filled with stupid shit created for stupid tourists.

If I had to spend 1000 yen in something, I prefer 1 night at the Karaoke then 1 "naruto shit".

Just my opinion.
>>
>>344399964
I was there for a year but I wouldn't have been able to do even 10% of what I did, where I got to go and what I got to ate if it wasn't for me luckily ending up friends with a semi-rich Japanese family there who really liked me and treated me almost like their son.

I only had about enough money to survive and occasionally go out, but they kept taking me along to all the things you can imagine. Flew me out to Okinawa, to Hokkaidô, took me to really high class restaurants and so on. I'm really thankful, but at the same time I hated feeling like a leech / feeling like I could never reciprocate

But sometimes you have cool moments. Like once I was at a big ufo catcher with capybara-san plushies inside and extra ones were kind of sitting on small racks in the back of it.

Either way the thing is if you were really rough with the joystick you were able to "smack" the claw into the back of the machine and the vibrations caused by that made those plushies slowly come down. Got like 4 big capybaras for 100 yen kek

You look for cheap flights several months in advance (wouldn't recommend going in summer anyway, it's so hot and humid you can swim through the air there)

Sign up on couchsurfing, it's what I did. Staying in hotels for a long time is expensive as fuck. Couchsurfing is mostly free, sometimes you pay a tiny fee like 500 yen a day or something, but that's mostly for when you stay with one person really long or they do something special.

Either way couchsurfing rocks because you get to stay with people living there and they take you along to go out and shit, at least that happened to me. Can only recommend it.

>>
>>344402293

Save up a lot of money. At least 4-6 thousand USD after tickets. Then go and rent out a hotel room for a month. You can usually get a good rate for extended stays at many hotels.

Although why you'd want to stay for a whole month is beyond me. You're bound to run out of things to do within 2 weeks.

If you're just visiting, I don't see why not. Plenty of people do it. Be prepared to spend more money though. You tend to get deals when you can speak at least some of the local language in any country.
>>
>>344403586
Yes, especially if you're in big cities

Food is affordable but living can be very expensive, even tiny rooms are easy 500 a month minimum, depends a lot on your city of course

If you have little time you have to make up your mind. Tokyo has almost everything, it's gigantic and worth a long visit for sure.

But Kansai with Kyoto, Nara, Kobe and Osaka is very nice as well, four hugely different towns.

Learn hello, thanks and sorry. At restaurants just point at stuff. However reading katakana and hiragana is already a big advantage.
It's relatively expensive depending on how much you want to travel and visit. I went with 5000 yurobux for 4 months.
Many places are great. Try Kansai because there are a lot of cool cities nearby and easily accessible by local trains.

It wasen't the BEST ramen I had in Japan, but it was the BEST rame experience I had in Japan.

The ramen was a bit spicy, but nothing more in that regard.
The meat was tender and the flavor with the onions makes it even more tasty.

The super flame oil he puts at the end is the real touch.

It basically makes all crispy and all the juice from the meat just melt all around the ramen.

Very good meal.

And this one Nip I speak to always sends me pictures of his food. Once he even sent me an entire manga series that was all about food (not Shokugeki no Souma, it was older than that).

How did you get that good at reading in a year?
Been learning for couple of years with daily vocabulary/kanji grinding and I still need to look up words ALL THE TIME.

it's pretty frustrating.

Don't be poor anon

Ok fast food ramen, but you had to try real food in Japan at least once.
>>
>>344404343
I'm probably not THAT good, but I went through periods of intensive learning (2 to 4 hours a day for 6 months straight) and it made it stuck. I'm almost done with the new Ace Attorney and I literally never looked anything up.
On the other hand I talk really bad and never understand anything.
>>
>>344404364
I fucking love udon, that looks so good. I'm a man and I need thick noodles inside me.
>>
>>344404256
One of the students I regularly do things with is a lot smaller than I am but eats incredible amounts. With these people we usually eat at two places instead of one for dinner because servings at one place arent enough for them.
>>344404330
The japanese seems to love and celebrate food. It's great because even at cheap fast food places the food is great and if you spend more you definitely get what you pay for. Ive been here for nearly half a year and have not been disappointed by a single random restaurant I chose, from 500 yen a meal to a traditional eel place where the normal sized set was around 3000
>>
>>344404343

Not that guy, but I was playing JRPGs in 7 months. Not well, mind you, but I was playing them. Three years later and I'm doing official translations. Still not master of the moonrunes, I've got a long ways to go before I'm anywhere near native level, but I'm not bad. I just read and translated a lot.

It's not just japan, a lot of east asia's like that.
>>
>>344404330
Maybe because they have a pretty healthy culture of preparing their own food instead of eating ready meal trash. Whenever I make food I have the urge to take a picture of it if it turns out good.

travelling alone is probably one of the best experiences you can have abroad. it's a thrill i guess. and you decide what you want to do rather than having to compromise with another person. plus it's a great way to meet new people because you're out of your comfort zone

t. someone who has never travelled alone but really wants to some day
>>
>>344404803
You're pretty much the opposite of me, I really wanted to travel alone and feel like I make all the decisions myself, and be independant. What would you want to travel with friends ?

you assume too much

travelling alone is fun if you are lucky and a certain type of person combined

Look at how many people smoke in Japan even today, their life expectancy, and incidences of lung cancer.

It doesn't negate cancer, it just reduces the risk factors by a lot.

You probably have less chance of getting robbed in Japan than you do in your home country. I'd worry if I was visiting America or some other shithole.
>>
>>344405098
I can't speak for all countries but Japan is probably the safest place in the world to travel.
>>
>>344405131

>>
>>344405098
I'm already scared of being robbed in my own country but I still took my chances with Japan. I just keep an eye out of my posessions. My hands are 100% of the time on openings.
>>
>>344405172
If he's a dumb retard who decides to go say hello to the friendly nigger, he might get robbed.

Anywhere else, you can go to sleep on a park bench at 2AM and wake up with all your stuff 9 times out of 10.
>>
>>344405098

People in Japan reserve their seats my placing their wallets on them, and usually come back to find their wallet undisturbed.
>>
>>344404431
I've been thinking of getting the japanese Ace Attorney games too. Seems like they might actually not be that hard to understand. From the anaime I'm pretty sure they're aimed at children.

I understand not being able to talk. The grammar also doesn't stick with me in a way that I could hold any more than a super basic conversation. Guess that's something you have to learn in japan.

Sounds like you're on a similar level like I am. Working in translation must be great since you can essentially get paid for studying...

OP here, just made it to the hostel, the Gundam cafe was taken over by Shinzo fucking Abe, as in, the Prime Minister of Japan. Couldn't make it up.

I just hung about and watched the show, where did my big guy get to?
>>
>>344405413
Theoretically, I have the knowledge to make good sentences, as I use it to decipher and break down complex sentences in text.
But when I actually talk, I get super autismo and only use variants of "please", "sorry" and "thanks".
>>
>>344405512
Just randomly strolling at night or grabbing a bike feels great. I can't do that on my own country. Tokyo is such a magical place.
>>
do the learn japanese threads on /a/ actually work?
>>
>>344405507

Nope, never taken the JLPT. Don't plan on it unless I need to for a job or something someday. I was just contacted by a company one day that had read my fan translations and asked if I'd do some stuff for them.

And yeah, it is essentially being paid to study, so that's cool. The great thing about translating is you need to understand what you're reading. When I'm just playing a game or reading something, if I simply can not figure something out, I can just skip it. Can't do that when I'm translating though. Some people do, some people will just make something up, but I just can't do that.

Japanese people may not steal your wallet but they do steal bicycles

The resources in the OP are great. The actual thread quality is usually pretty terrible. Sometimes you can get people to help you out when you need it, some will bend over backwards to help you. Other times the only people on are people who realized that they can't learn Japanese and they'll just call you a faggot or something.

Personally I play RPGs over periods of multiple months because I have the urge to check up absolutely everything.

Unless things go dumb like in SO5. When the game started throwing dozens of quests at once at my I just stopped caring. There was never anything worthwhile to understand in that game anyways.

>>344404803

I'd like to travel more, but yeah, would prefer going with friends too. At least for a first time. I get anxious about even simple things like getting transport or accommodation. I like to know exactly what it is I need to be doing, and having people doing it with you helps when learning the first time. After that I feel better and feel up to doing it myself.
