According to /v/, a bad game like Skyrim should have lost its appeal a long time ago. How come that isn't actually the case, and can someone explain this phenomenon? But more importantly, how come Witcher 3 doesn't have as good mod tools as Skyrim?
Witcher 3 fans even said the new DLC would save it, and certainly the Steam summer sale didn't help it

Skyrim is much more open and sanbox, with many mods that add much to the game, more than mods for TW3 can.
Skyrim is also much more open to RP, you don't need quests to level up, you level up through combat and the plenty dungeons, locations and otherwise offer plenty of areas to play out your own scenarios and goals, something that the witcher 3 does but can't come close to, as most areas have you forced into missions you need to accept to progress.
So the long as short of it, the tl;dr, is that people prefer sandbox open world games to linear narrative driven open world games.

Bought Witcher 3 on the sale even after I didn't like Witcher 1 or 2. The memers said it was better. I'm two hours in and so far it's a flower picking simulator. I talk to NPCs who have nothing to say, with less dialog options than Mass Effect and I pick flowers. The entire plot so far is a copypasta of the tracking scene from LotRs followed by a riveting plot where Geralt was supposed to meet somebody but they weren't there. Whoopdy shit.

While I enjoyed the shit out of Witcher 3, it didn't hold much replay value to me.
Skyrim and New Vegas do for me. Notice Fallout 4 isn't on the list either, I completed Fallout 4 3 times, once for each ending and then never touched it again.
