Anarchy Gage works ridiculously well if you can get a gun with unlimited ammo, I had an Infinity that someone gave me, changed the game completely just needed to keep firing. Early game though, close enough, anarchy, & a shotgun are enough.

Gaige. Go robot route. Prioritize getting the final skill in that tree then slap on a godly shield on yourself and deathtrap will have an exact identical one as well. Lots of potential great things to be done when that happens.

Without DLC I'd say Salvador is the best for solo, Maya is good too. I never played Axton so I'm not sure how he fares by himself, and from what I've heard Zer0 isn't very good solo. My personal recommendation is Maya

Axton is pretty great for solo depending on what you spec into. You can make his turret either have a lot of defense or make it really weak but have a huge nuke blast. He seems like the most boring but he can be pretty versatile.

Any of them work fine solo, there's just certain skills and weapon mods you want to avoid.
Axton is most generic, Zero is either melee or sniper focused primarily, Maya has a lot of fun crowdcontrol and Salvador is pure DPS (his tank skills are useless, avoid at all costs except maybe the passive HP regen).
You really should have gotten the DLC though, it almost doubles the amount of content in the game and adds loads of new weapons.

Like I said, it's alright when you get it (near the end of a first run), but NG+ and beyond it's damage doesn't keep up with enemy HP at all and you'll get far more use out of Slag turrets and/or having two turrets.

Snipers - Jakobs obviously.
Pistols - Jakobs again, but Vladof pistols are a close second for spewing bullets.
SMGs - Dahl. Maliwan is good, don't get me wrong. This is more of a personal choice though, since I like to hip-fire. Dahl smgs usually have more magazine capacity as well.
Shotguns - Hyperion is the least shit IMO. I fucking hate shotguns in Borderlands 2. All the barrel types use ass-loads of ammo per shot, and the weapons all look like bricks.
Assault rifles - SnS and Hyperion. Fuck Borderlands 2 rifles.
Launchers - Whayever I have that does the most damage to get me out of ffyl.
Bonus: Fuck bandit weapons. Big magazines mean nothing when the weapon shoots peas. Not to mention the terrible accuracy.

I don't know, they're supposed to be "more damage than SMGs, less rate of fire", I guess, except SMGs suck unless you're a Siren and can use a classmod to boost their damage like twice or more so ARs suck too. The damage sucks, the accuracy sucks (wish there was a Hyperion AR) which is really bad in a game where you need to hit critical spots, explosive one suck for the same reason Carnage sucked in BL1.
On other hand, it's not often you find an FPS where ARs and SMGs suck and shotguns/pistols rule above all. Usually it's the other way round.

I found a Ker-blaster was usually more efficient at killing things though. And surprisingly used less ammo as a result (even with 4 rifle ammo per shot).

That's why you get ones that don't take multiple ammo, and they do score crits. Explosive weapons do twice their listed damage as well, once from the bullet projectile and again from the small AoE.

Dunno, I just like sniping shit A LOT. Blue or white Jakobs snipers are my favorite weapons for the bolt action. Or just any cool-looking snipers made by other manufacturer.

Jakobs - High damage, can fire as fast as you mash the trigger (except Snipers just have crazy damage and a low fire rate)
Vladof - High fire rate
Dhal - Low recoil, Burst fire when zoomed in
Maliwan - High elemental damage/chance
Hyperion - Reverse recoil (starts with bad accuracy, gets better as you fire)
Torgue - Explosive damage
Bandit - Massive magazine size, slow as fuck reload, usually shit accuracy
Tediore - Fast reload, throws the gun like a grenade when you reload and spawns a new one in your hand.
Some manufactures don't make certain weapon types.
Dahl, Bandit, and Tediore weapons are often shit.
Guns can have parts from multiple manufacturers though, sometimes those combinations can end up making some good shit.

slag is also shit because you're not actually going to kill people with the gun. you're only going to use it for the effect so every other stat other than slag chance is meaningless. meaning once you find a slag gun with the highest slag chance, ALL other slag weapons are completely useless.

Gaige is best, she can fucking destroy ANYTHING if you use Anarchy and a Noorfleet, pus Deathtrap adds in a whole new level of damage. Salvador and Krieg are used for pure DPS type stuff, they're second only to Gaige in terms of fun/damage. Axton is best used as a support fire guy, so stick with his second and third trees. Zer0 is also good support depending on how you use him, however I didn't like him much. Maya is good for healing and taking people out of the fight , she's definition of support.
