Medieval was great, probably the best tw when taking release year into account, but as of right now you should get Attila, it's just better.
Civ is very different, from total war. Civ5 is very beginner friendly, though.

Third age total war best mod ever created.
Great with mods
Slow paced compared to RTW.
Also Vanilla it's literally one of the worst Total wars. Kingdoms was alright though.

You'll love medieval 2, but like the others said, civ 5 is much easier to get into, but in my opinion, isn't as fun
