I remember at launch Wind Serpents (those flying thunder snakes right?) were not meant to be tameable for some reason. I guess they were too strong? But i remember the patch where hunters were disallowed to tame them.
As for the hunters that already owned one, they had their favorite foods removed or something so hunters couldn't feed them. This would cause the pet to be unhappy and leave on its own after some time.

I actually liked running people for a while. I hit 70 on a draenei shaman while I was still pretty cancerous at the game. I just sat at the entrance to deadmines and offered runs for groups that got there. I made a few friends doing that. Got old when I had pretty much leveled this rogue from 15 to 70 for someone almost entirely by myself.

I think you're talking about the regular snakes, which are still untameable.
But Wind Serpents had an armor ignoring, ranged lightning attack so they were favored in PVE.
Even then, pets did not scale with the hunter's gear, so at one point it's just not worth having them out.

I remember the Rites of Passage quests that you needed to do in this zone. Throughout doing them, they kept saying that completing them would get you accepted by the Elders in Thunder Bluff, so I just avoided the capital until I completed them all since I thought I wasn't allowed in.
Gave hella good atmosphere and a sense of progression though.
