DR2 is a better game in almost every respect. The trial mechanics are improved, the cases themselves are better constructed and while this may just be personal preference I feel the individual character writing and motivations for murder made more sense in 2. Of course that could be deliberate in 1, since the last Symbols of Hope showed themselves to be monumental cunts which was Junko's whole plan, so maybe it's unfair to say DR1 is worse in that respect.

I was really looking forward to DR2 after playing through DR1, but ended up being so disappointed, that I stopped caring about the whole series altogether.

2's cases and difficulty were better but I felt some of the magic from the first game was gone. A lot of the people who say you aren't meant to care for the story are obviously people who didn't go in blind. First game I actually gave a shit about the story, wanted to know more about the mysteries and know about the characters some more.
2 just felt like they wanted to be way more over the top and zany, it's an unpopular opinion but the first game to me was the better game overall when it came to story, tone and atmosphere. Don't even get me started on that piece of shit Another Episode.

There's probably a lot more stuff and I'm all for crazy things. I like over the top stuff but the first game established its setting and the sequels just kept jamming whatever because it sounds cool in Kodaka's head. He mostly likely watched Back to the future part III and thought "Fuck, I want that in my game!" hence why he wants to use it as a plot device in the anime sequel.

Chiaki is so good. She's possibly the loveliest girl in the entire series. When you first meet her, she gives off this soft aura of a sleepy vulnerable girl who doesn't seem too passionate. Then, when you get to the first trial, you realize that Chiaki is actually one of the most intelligent people in the group. Not only that, as you progress through the game, you learn how kind Chiaki is and her capacity for empathy. Her love for her friends were completely unrivaled that she was able to break her own limits to save everyone.
She was a soft looking girl, yet she was at the front of every battle. Even though everyone kept falling into the pits of despair, she never lost hope and served as a beacon of hope for both the characters and the player. When Hinata was at the Final Dead Room door, she caught him before he could completely fall into despair. How else can you describe a person like that other than a saint? I might be biased, because I know someone who acts just like her, but Chiaki is seriously an angel. If there's anyone who deserves being called the Ultimate Hope, I'm positive that it's Nanami Chiaki.

I would say that it is improved. The purpose of both Hangman's Gambit is to have the player think of the word themselves rather than give them a list of options. The simplest method would be to just have the player type the word themselves, but that's not very fun or interesting. The 1st gambit only adds a little bit of gameplay to that, and shooting the letters just feels tedious. The 2nd one's gameplay is more engaging, and there are more instances were the design itself can help you with the word.
Sure, there are some bullshit moments where the game doesn't give you the fucking letter you need, but there are also times where you can shoot down 3 or 4 letters in quick succession.
